He'll have pretty big shoes to fill to convince me he's Ripley.
Some of AS's work I have liked (like on Fleabag) but some I have loathed (like on the Hollow Crown series).
The Talented Mr. Ripley with Matt Damon is a favourite of mine. I thought it was done perfectly.
We'll see about the new one... I'll give it a chance.

He is doing great in award season so it’s probably the best time to announce it. I’m glad for him!
Ripley was shelved for ages! It supposedly would be released at Showtime but the company ended selling it to Netflix. Steve Zaillian is a great screenwriter so I’m hopeful for it.
I would love if Netflix also announces “Eric” for 2024! C’mon!

Is that the one about a serial killer? I think I saw it and didn’t care for it.

I think AS can make a good Ripley, he was very charming as the priest. I just hope his Ripley has nothing to do with Moriarty.
I don't remember watching Matt Damon's version. I read the book as a teen (and I didn't understand why it was sooo praised, perhaps I should read it now). I also watched Alain Delon's version, Plein soleil.
Now that I think of the book and movie, perhaps AS is too old for the character.

Damon was 29 when he did his version of Ripley (who was supposed to be 25) and I thought he looked appropriately aged for the role (Paltrow and Law were also in their 20s).
The main characters, I thought, were supposed to be spoiled,"rich kids" who had no real purpose in life, other than to spend money which they had not earned. Tom Ripley was jealous of their easy wealth and privileged lifestyle.
I never watched the sequels, just the Damon version. So that's the only one I have to hold up in comparison.

I´ve just checked and Alain Delon was just 25 years old.
AS is 47. They must have changed much many of the details.

Although movie magic can make actors look younger than their years, I'm not sure if AS has one of those faces that can be made convincingly "younger" without some AI help.
And I really do think the plot of the story revolves around the youthful ennui of bored privileged class that Tom Ripley aspired to be part of. To change the character to someone over 40 would drain a lot of the atmosphere from the story I think.
It certainly would change a lot of the dynamics between the different people in the story.

I also thought that he was a little too old for the role!
I liked Matt Damon in the role. He is good playing traitorous upstarts (see also The Departed) but he didn’t went for the hyper charismatic Alain Delon thing. His Ripley was an almost invisible nerd who had 0 personality. That’s why he was good imitating others.
I think at the time he was criticized for not being right for the role but his take was actually very fascinating and the movie has become even more respected with time.
