i'm going to post this here, even though I'm sure it refers to The Grinch. Because we don't hear much of his voice in the trailer - and it doesn't sound quite like him - people were wondering if they're making him use an American accent for the role. I haven't read the whole thread yet, but it's an interesting discussion.

Benicio del Toro did the most awful Mexican accent ever in Traffic and he still won an Oscar. In part because Americans doesn’t care if he sounds right or not like Mexican (but still feel enough like the center of the universe to decide who should or not play which character) but also because he actually did a wonderful performance even when his accent was atrocious.

One of the first Twitter comments I read about The Grinch was about his voice. They wondered why anyone would hire someone with a gorgeous voice to do voice work, and then ask him to change his voice. I think the complaints are more about us not getting to hear Benedict's beautiful voice than about him having a bad accent.
And anyway, I didn't think Whoville was in the US, so I doubt he's doing an American accent. Also, there isn't one American accent. Accents are regional and vary a lot.

I didn’t noted any accent neither but I’m not a native speaker. I think he is just doing voice acting which I think it’s good.
I remember when he did Smaug a lot of people were moaning about the production hiring celebrities to do voiceovers instead of “professionals” just to alter their voices with computers. The thing is we had heard his Angel of Islington before on radio and he sounded there so demonic as Smaug so the “alteration” wasn’t actually so extreme like they believed. There are a few videos now showing he WAS indeed Smaug. It’s not a computer trick. It’s him doing an evil voice.
They wanted professional to do the work but when the celebrity actually did a professional work and acted a character instead of just being his famous self they thought his voice was altered!

Benicio del Toro did the most awful Mexican accent ever in Traffic and he still won an Oscar. I don't remember anything about Traffic but the worst accents I've ever heard are Giancarlo Esposito's "Chilean" and Mark Margolis' "Mexican" in Breaking Bad. It's so infuriating cause Breaking Bad is as close to a perfect TV show I can imagine but then they totally dropped the ball when it came to casting these two major roles. Neither Esposito nor Margolis are even native Spanish-speakers and it's very obvious from the way they speak let alone from the country the accent of which they're attempting. (I'm on the fence whether I'm ok with Esposito cause I still believe there's an actual story-related reason for his odd "accent", but then why aren't the other characters noticing that he's obviously not Chilean? But if there's no reason for it then why choose Chile in the first place, the Spanish-speaking country with easily the weirdest accent of them all? Also as far as appearances go Esposito would pass better for a Colombian than Chilean, and of course Colombia is more known for its drug industry than Chile so yes, there must be a reason 9 years in the making...) Ok actually the worst accents I've ever heard are the two instances I remember where someone had to speak English with a Finnish accent. Those are whoever portrayed the Finnish character on Cabin Pressure and the Finnish president on Veep. They were not even close, like obviously they didn't even try because the assumption is that there are so few Finnish people on the planet they're probably not watching/listening anyways. Well surprise!, we're so hungry for the world's attention that if we're even mentioned anywhere you can bet it will be talked about on a national level lol. I think the complaints are more about us not getting to hear Benedict's beautiful voice than about him having a bad accent. I think so too. Benedict has such a beautiful voice, I was disappointed when I watched the trailer and the Grinch didn't really sound like him.

I was disappointed that it didn't sound like Boris Karloff. We only hear one full sentence in the trailer, which is an American accent, but it also sounds higher pitched than usual which is an odd choice for the Grinch. I wonder if that particular line had a different delivery? You know how he goes in and out of accents and voice affects when imitating different people. Possibly that line was said differently for comic effect...?

I didn't think it sounded American. I think he did create a voice for this character, but it's still British. The sentence we hear him say is to his dog, so maybe he uses a higher pitch with Max than he uses with the Whoville residents that he hates.
