I love the bit with him coming out of the liquor store. He looks so pathetic! And yes, like a middle age alcoholic!

This scene... it makes me weep for the immense pain that Patrick feels at that moment. And I can't totally describe what I feel when I see BC acting out this character's torment! It's just indescribably immense and expansive and so personal and intense - all at once! I LOVE THIS SCENE! :-))

This clip comes after one of the funniest lines in the episode for me. At the start of the scene, she asks him to take the box of ashes off the table. He picks it up and places it on the floor, saying something like "Good idea! The waiters can kick him around". Even with repeated watchings, that still makes me laugh out loud. And then it's followed so closely by the conversation in the clip. The mix of comedy and tragedy works perfectly!

There is a lot of phrases that make me laugh every time I see them...and remember them. Well, te phrases (most of them from the books) and the wonderful delivering. And yes, they are full of pathos. Tragedy and comedy at te same time: “In the future we should agreed that: OF COURSE is not good idea” (taking heroin and cocaine) “Hi, I’m Patrick. I turn blue in your bathroom” “Yes, Nancy. It was a difficult relationship” The scene with Allison Williams was so great. They combined two characters and made it smarter. She is kind enough to go to a date with the boyfriend of a friend who is alone in a strange city in a sad moment but she doesn’t suffers fools! And at the same time the actress is very humble to let the star of the show to shine. BC’s performance there is full of all kind of layers, slightly more than in the rest of the movie. He is completely wasted by then and is convinced that the woman will save him. I love the part about the “revenge of the classes!”, too. But also when he says he also don’t like alcohol (because you lose your senses). And the “You are so inspiring. Do you heard, dad? I’m going to be a a lawyer!” That scene with him telling her what he would say to his dad above is so heartbreaking. He seems he is about to tell his story to that random woman (who again, he thinks she could save him!) but also has a moment with another woman earlier, Anne. This is not in the book. He is attracted to maternal women (Debbie and later, Mary) but at the end of the day the person who do what feminists call “the emotional work” is a man, Johnny. In the book he specifically search to talk with a trusted man, not a woman or a professional, about the rape but here he seems to search for the maternal figure (the awkward way he hugs Marianne)

That whole scene where he greets Marianne was like a needle full of morphine they give you in emergency when you are in a great deal of pain - everything hurts so much but then you feel this sharpness that goes straight to the heart of the pain and in floods this floating sensation of great relief... when he hugs her, he clings to her like a life raft, so tall and gangly, all bent over and so desperate (loops back to him hunched over Anne in the hotel as he bolts from her reminders of his past torture). And AW's reaction is perfectly done. It's just so wrong (for the character) but at the same time done just sooooo right (for the story - such emotional impact with lacerating humor and pathos)!!
This production - I could dissect it to bits and still find more to discuss! It really does have a cinematic depth and impact.
