Patrick is constantly searching for something to stop the pain so that he can carry on with his life. He thought that it would happen with the news of his father's death. He was so pleased at first, but then realized that death didn't erase the nightmares from his past. Even with the drugs, he's so sure that the next time will be the last time. And then he tries to get women to save him, but the women know better. The suicide attempts are interesting because he really should have died so many times before. He managed to survive all those overdoses and all those encounters with scary NY drug dealers. And then he could easily have drowned in any of the bathtub scenes, or electrocuted himself the tv that he dragged over to the bathtub, But he was determined to throw himself out the hotel window and was enraged when it didn't open. But it did, in fact, open. And that's when he realized that he didn't want to die after all.

I remember more great dialogue: "You are a policeman! Certainly not, I'm an Englishman!" "How is Mrs. Willy, Chilly?" "You have done something to the room. It looks different. It got on fire. I knew there's something!" "That's not a syringe, it's. bicycle pump!" Of course, I remembered those lines because mllemass mentioned the drug dealers! One of the great things about the books is that the process of recuperating is actually very slow and there's a few relapses. He will try to kill himself again in his 40s. It's just mentioned in the books but there's a clip that seems to suggest they dramatized it. As they did with the first attempt which it's actually a flashback. If I remember well, apart of the self-destructive behavior he doesn't try to kill himself during his NY trip but there's a flashback to an early attempt

Another one I absolutely love is when he is in the washroom stall, after snorting coke (in the hotel with the meeting with Anne) and he flushes the toilet and turns and says “That’ll fool ‘em!” With that little nod and a finger shake! The look on BC’s face as he says that line is priceless! Patrick is so “up” and foolish acting and jittery - perfectly said! That line holds a thousand anxiety produced wounds and yet it is also so comic! :-))

His delivering in that scene is so funny! He is, of course, not fooling anyone! In the previous scene when he is drugged on the floor and the concierge asked him if everything is ok. He babbled something and the guy just looks him with contempt and just walk away ignoring his very erratic behavior. They let him get away with anything because he is rich but it's very tragic in the sense that no one tries to stop him when he is so obviously destroying himself.

There is so much pain in that comic moment!
This production is filled to the brim with memorable lines, moment and scenes!
Almost too many to list. The more I watch it (going on 5 times now) the more I realise just how much of this production there is to appreciate! It is gorgeous in form and function.
And all morning I have had “Wild World” playing in my head and the picture of Patrick walking along the street, on the way to Debbie’s flat to announce the “Bad News”. I have a vinyl of Tea for the Tillerman (and a CD of it as well) -
Oh baby baby it's a wild world It's hard to get by just upon a smile Oh baby baby it's a wild world I'll always remember you like a child, girl…

What struck me most about this ep was his blind, desperate need to CONSUME anything in his path in order to try to assuage his pain. Drugs, alcohol, food, women, sex. It’s just all a constant wail of pain and agony, lightened only by bitter sarcasm. Talk about the reptile brain in operation.

When I read the books, I found myself laughing out loud many times, and then feeling bad because I shouldn't be laughing at this man's horrible life. It wasn't until after I had finished that I started reading reviews and watching interviews and discovered that the funny parts were supposed to be funny!
The funniest lines in the books were Patrick's sarcastic comments, either spoken or unspoken. The comments about (and towards) his mother-in-law and his son's nanny were especially hysterical. At one point one of them was complaining about someone not understanding her, and Patrick says "Even with all your helpful clues?". That line still has me in giggles whenever I think of it!

Showtime aired that trailer at the end of Bad News.
This one isn’t new but they added more critic’s quotes:
