That scene at Aunt Nancy’s where he sneaks into the billiards room for a drink is pure alcoholic thinking. He can’t use a glass because then he’ll have a dirty glass and people will know he’s been drinking. So he drinks out of the bottle. Then, he realizes he just drank nearly all of the alcohol, so of course he has to go get more so no one will know he’s been sneaking drinks. But first he has to finish to bottle and hide it because he can’t leave an almost empty bottle laying around, so he chucks it into the bushes. Drives drunk to the store. Notice he doesn’t just buy one bottle to replace what he drank. He buys a replacement bottle, an extra for later, AND a travel size to have in the car on the way home. All of this portrayed without words, but is instantly recognizable as alcoholic behavior to anyone who’s familiar with sneaky drinking. The complexity of behavior just to cover up the fact that he’s been drinking is alien to anyone who can just have one drink and not feel guilty, not have to hide it, not caught in the trap of knowing they’re being naughty. Perfection! Brilliant writing, direction, and acting, subtle yet important, speaks volumes about alcoholism.

Can anyone explain why it has a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes but only 46% from the audience reaction? I scrolled through the audience reviews and most are 5 stars. Should come out a lot higher than 46%.

The negative "reviews" were posted before it aired.
BC did one interview with Caitlin Moran in which he said something along the lines that male stars should ask about their female co-stars' salary and refused to work if they aren't equal (for the same work). He was and is still applauded for this in certain quarters but was also attacked by others! Even Comedian Ron Schneider tweeted making gun of him! Some trolls decided to down vote the thing he was promoting on that interview: Patrick Melrose!
