We would have heard by now if they'd used a real fanfic. There was an incident about that in the past. I can't remember exactly, it may have been when Caitlin Moran put BC and MF on the spot to read a Johnlock story at a Sherlock Q&A. Or maybe the fanfic was quoted in an article? Anyway, fans were upset at the story being ridiculed, and especially because they worried that the author would feel hurt.

Yes that was the one. BC was pretty uncomfortable about the idea but Caitlin Moron (sorry Moran) just would not take the hint. I’m not a fan of hers.
Most fan fiction is dire beyond belief but there are some jewels among the rubbish. There’s a writer called thedragonaunt on Fanfiction.net who created a very well written and plotted Sherlolly AU for example.
I haven’t read any fanfic in ages but will look yours up QueenZod. I love a bit of Sherlolly. 😄

Now that you’ve said you might look up my writing, I’m all nervous now! Lol! Just a warning, it does get smutty. 😁 Bride Song is my most recent effort. It’s about mutual healing.
My handle, Garuda Dreams of Rain, just came to me one day. A Garuda is a giant mythological bird that lives in the north, among rocks and snow, brings wisdom and eats Nagas, is the mount of Krishna, and is kind of mysterious. I have friends who think I’m kind of like a Garuda. Anyway, I was wondering one day what they might dream about, and it occurred to me they’re not familiar with rain, and so might dream about it. I was trying to reference that feeling of longing for things unexperienced, dream worlds, the soggy wonder of beneficial rain, and Buddhism. It’s kind of a messy reference, but that sums me up, lol. Messy, trying to be wise, and more than a bit bizarre.

Maybe, and I'm not ruling it out, but I don't think it's entirely farfetched to assume that they asked someone for permission, and that person decided to remain anonymous and not to go all over the internet to brag about it, or maybe just embarrassed. Either way, I prefer to think of it as "unknown".
