Favorite episode and character? (PM) What’[/b] your favorite episode? Mine is Some Hope. Favorite character’ other than Patrick. Mine is Julia. I felt very sorry for her at the end.

I liked every episode for different reasons. Patrick was obviously my favourite character but otherwise I think my favourite horrible character was Nicholas Pratt and my favourite “nice” character was Patrick’s wife who was always there for him even when she could no longer live with him.
I found Julia too selfish to have much sympathy for her.

Such a difficult question! I really loved At Last. There was so much going on with Patrick, Ben’s acting was phenomenal, and I particularly liked when he was in hospital, looking down over the edge of his bed, up through the well, where his younger self was peering down at him. Gave me shivers! And the funeral and party after had my mouth hanging open. Pure farce. Such a delight.
Fav horrible character was Nicholas. What a terrible, nasty man! And I liked Julia, too. I felt sorry for her as well. What a waste of a life.
Mary was the bomb. Loving yet firm, able to speak her boundaries and still be supportive of him. Great stuff.
And I admit I absolutely adored Fleur, the red haired lady who hated her kids. What a wacko! So fabulous. And Annette was brill, too. She had a great line, “sometimes those who are the most deserving of blame also are the most deserving of compassion.” Just lovely.

I've seen Bad News the most times, so it's my favourite right now. But I like them all for different reasons, Besides Patrick, I really liked Anne - she was smart, sensible, sensitive and spoke her mind. She at least attempted to help young Patrick, and she told off that rotten David Melrose!

It’s very difficult, indeed. All the episodes feel so different and accomplished.
About the characters, they are all wonderful some of them because they are awful: of course, Nicholas, Princess Margaret and Eleanor are standouts. The mother was probably more complex here than in the books because we don’t know exactly what is she thinking (there is not a narrator telling us) and Jennifer Jason Leigh made her a mystery: “Why she didn’t...?” Also she is a victim and at the same time a monster. David is wonderfully played by Hugo Weaving but he completely a monster so it’s very difficult to name him as a favorite! And yes, Julia ends like a very nasty character. In that scene in which she treats awfully to that waitress Patrick (and we) finally see her for what she is and always was. Maybe she is slightly tragic but there is not redemption for her.
From the good ones, Mary, without doubt! Anna Madeley gave her a lot of dignity to her character. She is extremely noble but she isn’t a fool. She clearly loves and feels for Patrick but in this world there’s not biggest sin than let kids down and she wouldn’t do that even if that means to sacrifice the protagonist! We want him to survive, of course, but we also applaud her for kicking him out! That’s how complex this thing is! In this regard I also liked Bridget, she begins as a disgusting girl, then a frivolous woman but finally redeems herself when she choose her daughter, mother and her own dignity above fortune and titles.
But of course, the best character is Patrick. He is the whole thing!
PD: I also loved Fleur, Chilly Willy and that scene with George, John Standing character, in Some Hope was very moving!

When I read the books I immediately took to Bad News and loved the frenetic pace and the many voices Patrick played out in his head. It was so active after the almost static pace of Never Mind (Bad News seemed like it was hyperventilating, while Never Mind seemed like one long drawn out exhale). And BC really nailed that whole tone and scope of that chapter.
But as I read the rest of the books I grew to really appreciate the whole "foundational" aspect of Never Mind (although I completely agree with these two chapters being reversed in the visual telling).
Mother's Milk was another chapter for which my appreciation evolved. I was really thrown off by the change in perspective at the beginning of that book, but by the time I finished reading it I was counting it as my second favourite.
By the time I finished At Last I had determined that it was my most favourite book of all five! But the more I think on it that could very well be because of all the rest of the books!!
So I have come to the conclusion that I can't choose and I guess that's my conclusion with the episodes as well for the miniseries.
Everytime I think I have made my definitive choice, I think of other reasons why I love the another episode just as much!
As for the characters - not one of them can even touch Patrick! No one comes close. Sometimes I was so angry at him for his failings but I always came back to him with arms wide open.
As for the actors - BC is my man! But all the other supporting cast were splendid and that was important because with BC's brilliant performance I didn't want the others dragging his efforts down... and no one did IMO. The collaborative effort was perfect. As was EVERYTHING ELSE in this production!

My favourite book is "Some Hope", followed closely by "Never mind" and "Mother's Milk". I liked some parts of "Bad News", but not long descriptions of Patrick's hallucinations, and "At last" is interesting, but also a bit rehearsing the earlier parts, IMO. However, as for the series, it is difficult to decide, they were all equally excellent. Having to pick one, maybe "Mother's milk", because it gives the possibility to all characters to shine. And I loved almost all supporting characters. I would give the first award to Jennifer Jason Leigh - she really should win a Bafta or Emmy for her Eleanor. The one character that left me indifferent, was Johnny-
