I loved Whiplash but I positively hated Lalaland: for me it was incredibly boring. I couldn't related to the characters: Emma Stone is a very good actor but I found her character completely two-dimensional in this one. Agreed about Gosling: he not necessarily "is" too old for the parte but "looked" too old: I think Teller would be far more convincing. And as neither Stone nor Gosling are good dancers / singers, music parts were booooooring, IMO.

Saw la la land tonight. Hated the first hour of it, thought the rest was just ok. Do not understand why it's so popular.

I don't understand either. Super overrated.

It's the first thing I've seen Ryan Gosling in and I have to say I thought he was a pretty decent actor. I'd be interested in seeing more of his stuff. I didn't like either Emma Stone's character or her acting.

I didn't like either Emma Stone's character or her acting. Haha, I'm the exact opposite. I thought Ryan Gosling was miscast and out of all the films I've seen him in, his performance in LLL was probably the weakest I've seen. Half Nelson, Lars and The Real Girl, Drive and Place Beyond the Pines are my favorites of his. Whereas Emma Stone who I haven't in the past thought to be all that great (not even in Birdman for which she got an Oscar nomination, there were 3 other supporting actresses I would have given it before her in that same film) I really loved in La La Land.

Well I've nothing else to compare either with as this is the first thing I've seen them in. Maybe I'd agree with you if I'd seen the other movies. 😀

I much recommend all the films I mentioned in my earlier post, they're all great! Birdman was so exhilarating, Half Nelson is a great drama and Gosling is wonderful in it, Lars and The Real Girl is funny and depressing and uncomfortable at the same time but again a wonderful performance by Gosling, ditto Drive which I haven't seen in a while but it has a quiet intensity to it and Place Beyond the Pines is simply a wonderful film on the sins of the father affecting their sons - now I really want to rewatch it.
