It’s slow so I would put another apparently very polemic thread here!
The Academy announced that category and other boring silly changes in the ceremony and OF COURSE, everyone on social media is very angry about it! Especially movie critics and, of course, Award pundits! It’s kind of hysterical I saw a tweet saying it’s the death of cinema (again for 100,000th time since Betamax!) and another saying it is CLEARLY a racist complot against Black Panther!!! LOL
I was sincerely surprised with a few serious American critics. Maybe they just were happy to find another issue to be cynical about those awards. I can understand that! But I fail to see what is the big deal apart of wanting to participate in the dumb angry mob! Oscars are irrelevant and nowadays more than ever! I don’t doubt the ceremonies will be even worst than they were in the last few years (and they were awful! I read!) so why the big fuss! An award pundit wrote that it’s a desperate measure. Of course it is! They are losing more and more audiences every year! Another one posted numbers showing how popular movies used to win Oscars but not anymore! Really? How old are you? I’m old enough to remember what Betamax is and I indeed remember when popular movies used to win Oscars, then critics were angry that little movies didn’t and advocated for them! I thought that’s what we all wanted! Little artistic movies winning Oscars! Of course, that also meant general audiences didn’t cared too much for seeing those unknown movies and their unknown stars winning awards on TV! The Academy tried to help things including 10 movies in the best movie category and it worked in the early days, there were a few genre movies included in the categories. That’s what it was aimed then and that’s what it’s aimed now: genre movies that totally domain Hollywood offer. But then “boring” voters forget about superheroes and now they are nominating even more little films! LOL Things could only get “worse” with the new members. It’s great of course they went for more diversity, left field and foreign options but can you imagine how all those actors from, I don’t know, Argentine or Mexico that were added this year, who do mainly local films and are probably cynical about Hollywood will vote? It actually sounds exciting but I doubt they will vote for Black Panther no matter if some Twitter “activist” think it’s racist not to do it!
My point is it’s insane all the explanations out there about why they are angry. Some of them are even contradictory: Is it bad because they are showing they think superheroes movies are inferior and don’t deserve the main award or because they want to award movies that do so much money that just don’t need awards? I would have liked a more objective cold-headed perspective that analyse things like what it’s the influence of Weinstein company disappearing, for example. Of course there are other indie companies and sub-divisions out there but it was Harvey who began to change things in the early 90s. He did aggressive campaigns for a lot of little movies and when he succeeded, other indie companies copied strategies; What’s the influence of peak TV? and most recently streaming services taking more risks, hiring important filmmakers and buying Festivals hit movies? Maybe there is a piece out there (I will admit I haven’t search for them!) but until now I’m seeing just the angry mob!
