I felt like seeing a movie today, so I decided on the new Mamma Mia movie. I figured that even if it was bad, it would still be two hours of ABBA songs. But I loved it! I really shouldn’t have - it was two hours of crazy nonsense - but it was a hoot! I enjoyed this much more than the first movie. And even though this had some unfamiliar songs, they were still ABBA songs and just lovely. Colin Firth was hilarious, as was Cher. Everyone seemed to have so much fun that it was hard not to smile all the way through it.
There was a weird moment during the movie when there was a malfunction and the screen went black, and we only got sound. We sat in there in complete darkness until someone thought to go get help. For some reason, I imagined that there was a person sitting up there beside the projector, but I guess that was only in the olden days. Eventually, they turned on some lights, and after that the picture appeared again, but without sound. I guess they decided to re-wind it, so we saw about ten minutes of it a second time before getting to the part where it had stopped. It was fine after that.
By the way, I have a policy of sitting through all the credits at the end of movies. I’ve always done this. So when this movie ended, about six of us remained in the theatre watching the credits. The lights were on and the girl had come in to sweep the floor, waiting for us to leave. When the credits ended, the screen went black and I got up to leave - but then another scene appeared! It just an outtake/blooper, but it was cute and I’m happy that I got to see it.
This movie reminded me of one of my pet peeves. I’ve seen this so many times in movies and on tv shows, and it drives me crazy. I hate it when they want us to know that characters are Greek/German/Italian/Spanish/Swiss or whatever, so they dress them in ridiculous clothes. They are shown wearing either traditional folk-dancing costumes, or drab, frumpy Depression-era outfits like we saw on the Waltons. I just want to scream when I see that!
That’s my rant for the day!
