What you people think about it?
I'm not in favor of "sacred cows" but without doubt the degree of difficulty is HUGE here! And not just because Hitchcock but Joan Fontaine and Laurence Olivier! Also who can play Mrs. Danvers? Will modern audiences to embrace a character like her? What about the revealing that the hero beats and kills his wife... and she deserving it?
On the other hand, we right now have grown-ups acting like little kids saying an objectively bad but popular kids flick is somehow "perfect" and no one should never dare to adapt the source material (which the bad movie didn't even respected!) again!!!!

It’s already been remade, with Charles Dance in the 80s, I think. Of course the Hitchcock version will always be the top of the heap, despite the change in the story of accidental death. This version doesn’t impress me very much, but maybe because I’m off Armie due to his insensitive remarks over Stan Lee’s death and I don’t see how anyone can improve on Olivier or Fontaine’s performances.

I say go for it. Personally I have several movies that I LOVED the original and was very apprehensive about having an adaptation made but when i saw the adapted version loved I too. In the case of Far From the Madding Crowd i thought the newer version was superior to the old one (which i still loved BTW).
Not a big fan of AH so I don't know if I'll catch this one, but I do think there shouldn't be anyone pooh-poohing it being made.

I think the Armie Hammer affair proves that is not good for celebrities to have social media! There is a lot of dumb stuff on Twitter! We all say dumb stuff and later regret it but when you are a celebrity and post it on Twitter, it is a big problem!
Also I don’t think it helped him that Stan Lee took photos with half of the world so maybe Hammer though he was criticizing the rich and famous but all those numerous fans took it personally!
I think there can always be surprises and I don’t think it’s fair to criticize something that it hasn’t been even made but it’s indeed a huge challenge for those involved. I personally think those two actors aren’t very charismatic or with strong personalities. In the case of Hammer is a big problem because the role is of a mysterious maybe dangerous man. He is brooding, Hammer is like a pretty all American boy! The role of the girl is of a humble and naive young woman so having a strong personality it’s not central. I still think they both are miscasted! The director is very popular with critics, tho.

d ...but maybe because I’m off Armie due to his insensitive remarks over Stan Lee’s death... I had to search to see what AH had said and I think though it is a little dumb to go after his fellow actors I wouldn't say his remarks were insensitive and in some sense I agree with him. If there is something I hate from some popular BC's fans accounts is that that they try to make each death of a celebrity something related to BC. When Hawking died it was all about BC playing him -they use a pic of BC as Hawking instead of a pic of SH - BC meeting SH, BC giving to the charity, etc. With Stan Lee it was the same. I don't think some actors/people posted their pictures with SL to make the death about themselves. I'm sure some did.

They protest too much. AH was clearly speaking about celebrities, why would a non celebrity take it personally if there isn't a bit of truth in what AH said?

Because they were all posting photos with Stan , too! So if celebrities were being insensitive for doing it they were, too. (Someone ironically asked him if it was right when she posted a photo of her with her late grandmother on Facebook when she died!)
I understand what he wanted to say and as you said, probably that was the case with some celebrities but the generalization wasn’t good. Also he committed the error of answering directly to critics. And with critics, I mean random people on Twitter.
But agreed it was just a faux pass not something really awful.
About the movie, I thought that maybe they will do a some kind of preppy version of the book. That would be original, I imagine. And could explain AH casting! I’m not kidding! I kind of think it sound interesting if that’s the case. I’m still thinking he isn’t very mysterious, tho.

It strikes me as some bad casting, whatever these two actors skills, their particular talents and vibe do not seem to fit those characters. I’ll withhold final judgment till it’s made, but I don’t have high hopes or any excitement for it. Though part of my disinterest probably comes from the fact that I really don’t care for him as an actor. To me he comes off as bland and his performances have no depth. I always wonder that casting directors couldn’t have found a better actor for the role. For example, AH wasn’t the *worst* thing about The Lone Ranger, but he was boring and stiff. And yet he keeps getting cast in high profile projects. And I see his name and think “stop trying to make Fetch happen”. Sure, he’s tall, conventionally good looking and well connected , but I don’t understand why he gets so many opportunities while other better more charismatic performers are one and done, or never get a break at all.

I saw his tweet about Stan Lee right after he posted it. I thought it was really nasty of him to criticize how people chose to honour SL’s memory, and his response to the replies was even nastier. Posting selfies with with Stan Lee is no different from tweeting something like “Spider-Man changed my life” - people find some personal connection.
I’ve been to far too many funerals in the past few years, and it seems to be common practice to have a display of photos of the deceased. My mother disapproves because she thinks it’s wrong to make light of the death by showing photos of people laughing and having fun. Now they even have videos and slide shows playing, much to my mother’s horror!
At my uncle’s funeral about ten years ago, the display set up by his family had the usually photos of my uncle over the years - with his wife, children, grandchildren and siblings, including my father. My uncle had dozens of nieces and nephews, but the only one who made it into the display was me! It was a photo of me, aged seven, posing with my aunt and uncle. I remembered when it was taken but I had never seen that photo before. It really meant a lot to me to see it - so yes, it became all about me at my uncle’s funeral. Armie Hammer would have been very angry with me!

If I were to watch only films with the actors who are decent people in the private life I would be probably left with the option to watch one film in a year, lol. I think Lily James is far too glamorous to play Rebecca, though.
