I saw a tweet from Cuarón about some screenings of Roma in México for students and once again I went to check if it was going to be released here. Yes! It's going to be released in 2 days! www.cinemateca.org.uy/(And Bergman!)

There was a polemic between Netflix and the two biggest movie theatre chains here. Cuarón was asking on Twitter for screens and one of them answered saying they would give them to him if Netflix moved the its streaming release! So we have our own Netflix controvery here.
It was released just in cinematheques and independent movie theatres. Just three screens in my city!

I'm going to try to watch it this weekend. The weather is horrid though (we are having like two days of high temperature (30°C) followed by days of rains, low temperature (now it's 15°C) and tempests, it is like a deluge atm) and the place where it is shown is near the sea/river and very windy. Apparently on Satuday is going to be normal.
Netflix could have some cinemas and show their pictures before streaming them.

Sounds like a normal day here! We have the worst weather! Yesterday and today we were around 30ºC (we are in winter. A high temperature here is around 40ºC in the Summer). Yesterday was raining but today was so dry and windy that there were warnings of possible fires. Tomorrow we supposedly will have a temperature of one digit and thanks to the wind it will feel colder.
I imagine the humidity is much more bigger there, tho. It’s not easy going out with a hot and humid weather!

I watched it. It’s technically brilliant! The story is simple and moving. And I guess it’s also a very feminist film about abandoned women who just survive because they have to. Men are vicious and corrupted meanwhile women in a discreet and humble way, heroic.
The period is wonderfully captured. I am not from Mexico City and I wasn’t born in 1970-1971 but it was funny to see things I recognized from the 80’s or things I have heard about. There is a very surreal scene with this kind of Mexican martial arts guru wearing lykra that was actually real! He was also a Harry Houdini type of character and died while doing an escapism act before I was born but he, has it’s shown in the movie, should have had a big impact in Mexico imaginary because I immediately knew who he was when I saw him on screen!
TBH I doubted when they showed the Corpus Christi massacre because it felt a little as the typical trick of putting your characters in middle of an historical event just to show the period but at the end it worked well because it was pivotal for the development of one important character.

Saw it tonight - loved it!
It takes its time, is subtle and powerful. The hospital scene had me in tears. Amazing film. A real masterpiece.
