I know some of you will be happy to see the demise of Tumblr, but I’ll be sad to see it go. Tomorrow is the big “purge” day, and lots of people are boycotting it too (just for the 17th), so we shall see if they manage to turn it around. Since they introduced their new flagging procedures, it’s been hilarious what posts are getting flagged. Pictures of donuts, cats, trees, ancient and modern art. Basically anything *except* actual porn lol.
Let us have a moment of silence. 🙏🏻

I'm against censure but TBH some of the material there was very disturbing. Especially, because it was basically a very young people site and the extreme sexual material was kind of politicized by them. I understand the change of policies were because new legislation against child pornography and there were rumors they found it there and TBH I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. Why Tumblr would suddenly become moralistic after all those years of extreme material of all kind published there if they weren't threatened by legal isssues? I'm not saying that I'm happy with censoring but they should had been more careful since the begining. EDITED: Just saw this tweet:

First, it changed politics because David Karp, Tumblr's founder, sold it to Yahoo, which afterwards was purchased by Verizon. Karp left Tumblr in the end of 2017. It isn't true that tumblr is used mostly by women and very young people. I couldn't find (I didn't search much) a 2018 statistic but here is the one for 2016. www.globalmediainsight.com/blog/tumblr-users-statistics/ I think tumblr has a very bad administration and also needs an update. It isn't possible that the only way they can manage child pornography is by forbidding all. Also showing nipples is now forbidden so it goes beyond child pornography. It's just a stupid censure thing. I don't even like tumblr, the format isn't good imo.

I imagined that the reason behind the very strict rules were because the problem is very difficult to control now.
It's exaggerated, I know, and it doesn't help they aren't using humans to distinguish what is what!
But I genuinely wasn't surprised with the news. I always thought the extreme porn would destroyed them! I never saw anything related to kids (the worst I saw was violent stuff) but people always said there was there and that everyone knew.
And sorry the new legislation wasn't about child porn but sex trafficking. I was talking about SESTA and FOSTA approved in the USA. A lot of critics think they are the reason behind a lot of recent censure on Internet.

I liked using tumblr to post info about shows, actors, life... more so a few years back than now. But I have had some interesting conversations/exchanges with people I've "met" there. And have seen some incredible content made by extraordinarily creative/imaginative/talented people. Artwork, gifs, poetry, short stories and long form fan fiction.
That said, I hate the porn bots - random accounts that follow you that have porn gifs in their profiles/avatars. You get an email "xhfthso123 (or whatever) is following you" and if you happen to open the email, you have a gif of a sex act showing up in your email. Sometimes the gif somehow shows up in the email header before you open it (depending on the app/device) There's nothing about my tumblr that would indicate that's what I'm looking for (it's all Benedict, Sherlock (not Johnlock) and some political posts and pretty landscapes ...why do they shove themselves at accounts that have nothing to do with their ***SD*S*S? I'd block them and more would come. I figure they are just bots or spammers, but it was annoying. There were enough ways for people on tumblr to find that stuff if they wanted it, there was no need for them to spread it to people who weren't looking for it (and made it so I couldn't surf tumblr for Benedict news at work, because who wants random porn blogs in the gif / image history of their work computers?)
I'd say it's "too much too late"....tumblr let the cockroaches run amok, and now are stamping out everything that crawls because they did a bad job managing things.

So agree, Hannah Lee! I loved being able to see great edits of BC and other Beautiful People, and the humor was snarky (right up my alley). Great writing, fanfic, comradeship with some pretty clever folks, easy access, but the porn bots brought it all down. Staff shouldn’t have let it go so long (despite regular pleas from users to clean it up), and then it was removed from the App Store b/c of that child porn stuff, and that really made them go overboard in the cleanup stage. It may survive, but we’ll see.

Everyone here is probably too young to remember Chat Rooms, but I hated them. I didn’t like “talking” to people I didn’t know. My sister loved them, though. She liked that she could talk with tons of people and still remain anonymous. She’d spend hours online chatting away to strangers.
When You’ve Got Mail came out, it was such a romantic (and innocent) portrayal of Chat Rooms - Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan “meet” in an over-30 Chat Room. But the few times I tried it, I didn’t last very long before someone posted something disgusting. I never went into “singles” Rooms or anything like that. It was always fan Rooms for movies or singers that I liked. And I rarely “said” anything. I mostly just read other people’s conversations. But they would know I was there because there would be a list of everyone there. I had chosen Greeeeneyes as my name, so it would show when you entered and left the Room.
The Chat Rooms had Moderators, but they couldn’t control what went on in private conversations. Soon after entering a Room, someone would send me a private message that was clean and friendly because they knew that I was new, but then they would quickly either ask for my measurements or send me a link that would turn out to be a video of them naked. I was always so creeped out by the stuff I saw!
I never joined Tumblr, but when I discovered Benedict, Tumblr had all the information about him that I was looking for. I found 3 or 4 reliable Tumblrs that would post the latest news and photos, and I would even ask questions there that they’d answer. And then one day I learned that my favourite Tumblr was run by a teenage girl, and I decided that I wasn’t too comfortable hanging around with teenagers. And I didn’t think that they should be hanging around with old folks! I never saw anything inappropriate during my short Tumblr time, but I did notice that many of those girls seemed sad and lonely. I remember that two of them took breaks from posting because they were dealing with depression (that’s what they said), and one of them was a guy. Those two eventually left Tumblr. I hope they’re ok!

I remember chat rooms! I joined one for cats, but there were so many trolls posting made-up stories about how their cat got electrocuted or something that I didn’t last very long. Why are folks so horrible when they’re anonymous?
I was just on Tumblr, and things look pretty normal, including the (probably) 500 porn bots still following me, lol. Good job on cleaning it up. 😂

Has Tumblr gone? Does that mean the septics have finally vanished?

Hi, Ellie.
No, Tumblr is still there. Some people deleted their blogs, got accounts on other sites, complaint and threat they were going to delete their blogs.
The septics and the worst anti-septics are still there, in their bubble, fighting each other.
