Anyone seen this? I just watched it the other night and nearly broke something laughing! Black comedy with Steve Buschemi, Jeffrey Tambour, tons of other really great actors, including Jonathan Aris in a small part funeral directing, whom they called “slim Hitler,” lol. It was on Barack Obama’s “best of” list, and is worth a watch if you like black comedy.

TBH I didn’t laughed a lot but agreed that it’s a brilliant and very brutal historical satire (not just because the ghastly death of real historical figures but all the jokes about the killing, rape and torture of innocent citizens).
The actors are wonderful playing all those horrible creatures! Especially Simon Russell Beale and Steve Buscemi in the leading roles (if we can call them “leading roles” because it’s mostly an ensamble piece). I also loved to see Michael Palin in a fiction film again! Playing one of his infamous weak and pathetic roles with a small dose of fanatism! Buscemi sounding like one of his small-time all-American thugs was very funny. It seems to me they all used their own accents which was actually great and I guess it make the theme of fanatism, political-climbing and betrayal much more universal. It’s not just about a very particular historical moment!
EDITED: I visited the Wikipedia page and saw this paragraph about its banning in Russia:
Luckily in the Western polemic political movies aren’t considered a major threat that can destabilize entire countries! So ridiculous! 😉
