But isn’t this more of his lies? The print and broadcast media did cover his announcements and his press conferences and Rudi Gulliani’s bizarre car park press conference. They simply followed up by making it clear his allegations were baseless and the TV did cut away when his remarks were threatening to become libellous. Trump is claiming he was censored when what happened was he was simply not allowed to spout lies and libellous remarks unchallenged. If only the media had the balls to do that earlier in his Presidency then the US might not be in the appallingly volatile and divided social mess it is right now. Agreed that's impossible to censor that guy and that he won't shut up! (I'm still laughing about the Guiliani's press conference!). For me, that's the main issue: networks helped him to his very fake narrative that he is the victim here. They didn't stop him, they fed the narrative. That's why I think it was an error. I don't know but maybe the little messages below his deluded tweets were better. They didn't censored him. They just told the world his statements were questionable. Lol. The Gulliani Press Conference in the Four Seasons Total Landscaping car park was pure comedy gold. It was like something out of Veep or The Thick of It - only even more bizarre. 😂

But I think that example is not the same as Trump. There have and will continue to be huge differences of opinion on lots of things to do with Covid because everyone is still learning about the disease. And the mask issue remains controversial because their effectiveness depends largely on what type of mask you wear and whether or not you wear it properly. Trump on the other hand has frequently made statements that are just out and out lies and easily provable as such. That he was allowed to get away with it by the mainstream media for so long is more worrying to me than the fact they are now challenging him. Social media is a bonkers free for all where any nutters can present as fact any ludicrous notion they like (fake pregnancies/ robot babies for eg 😀). If the mainstream media outlets are to remain relevant and carve a place for themselves in this environment then they must become the source people go to for facts rather than agenda driven fantasies. They seem to have lost sight of that purpose over the past few years with the result that the likes of Wattsap and Twitter have gained far more currency than they deserve as sources of information. A situation Trump used to great effect aided by the lack of any real counter arguments by the mainstream press. I hope that now the media might finally be waking up and doing their feckin’ job! Of course it's not the same but at the time some people reacted to her as it was the same. That's the worry! Agreed that the mainstream media had a huge part in "creating" him and the divisiveness. Since clicks became something important they just went for the bizarre and the outrageous. I also agreed that real counter arguments are the answer. Not just suddenly cut him! He is there and sadly he won't go. I mean half of the country voted for him. He isn't alone. I think they should confront him with good arguments and show to his voters why he is wrong and isn't a good option.

Omg the Four Seasons Total Landscaping press conference! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣. That was hilarious! A fitting bookend to this debacle of a presidency, imo. The memes! The jokes about sex toys and cremation! Twitter had a field day and it was glorious! Haha! It still cracks me up.
I’ve been so angry at our mainstream news b/c they haven’t been able to even call his lies, lies! For 4 years they’ve been saying falsehoods, exaggerations, misleading statements, etc. Why couldn’t they speak the blunt truth and call them lies? I think it’s b/c their corporate overlords got addicted to the drama, the increased viewership and the ad revenue and they’re going to have a hard time breaking away from that and return to a sense of actual news reporting. The news has become entertainment now.
We need to have a reckoning with social media about the spread of disinformation, especially Facebook. Zuckerburg has a lot to answer for.

Also, the problem with Trump supporters is that many of them can’t be swayed by facts or logic. It’s like a cult. You can present them with facts, statistics, etc., but they just think you’re lying to them or they’re so uneducated they can’t understand them. I’ve talked to a lot of them and they can’t be budged. Not all, of course, because a goodly number have wised up and realized they were conned, but enough still believe Trump’s bs and think of him as a savior. Don’t know how you “deprogram” 70 million people. 🤷🏻♀️

Yes I mostly agree with you and I think the media have been confronting him in the way you describe post election. Unfortunately it’s too late. He has already indoctrinated millions with his lies. Thankfully not enough to get him a second term but enough to cause a whole lot of trouble.

Don’t know how you “deprogram” 70 million people. 🤷🏻♀️ But haven’t we here on the board been discussing this sort of thing on a much smaller scale for years. The BC “septics” are just like Trump supporters. They determinedly spout narratives that are total lies because is suits their agenda. They want to believe BC is unhappily married to a horrible person so they spin utterly ludicrous tales of fake babies and international crime to promote their narrative and some of them even believe this stuff despite the fact that it is transparently and ridiculously false. Take that kind of spinning onto a much larger and more dangerous level and have it orchestrated by people with real power and you get Trump and Brexit supporters. People who are so deep into the fantasy spun to them that they are totally unable to recognise truth.

I think this article about the small Mexican American communities that historically voted for Democrats going for Trump is fascinating, It was a mix of real anxieties (fear to losing their jobs because another possible lockdown or the closing of the oil industry in the region because ecological reasons) with conservative issues (anti-abortion sentiment). They weren't too much worried about the racist discourse because after all... he never REALLY built the promised wall! It was just the anxiety about what a Biden triumph mean for them. Then I read the comments. Mostly by pro-Trump conservatives saying how similar they are to those poor working class Mexicans! How all of them are family oriented, working, conservative people and that Republicans shouldn't abandoned them! I thought OMG! Democrats should really take in consideration these seemingly little things because they won but these communities supposedly were their future and now they are just losing them because they took them for granted.

Yup, you’re right, Ellie. Most of the time it’s mostly harmless idiocy. I mean who cares if Aeltri is off in her corner spouting crazy nonsense? It doesn’t affect BC personally, it’s not going to cost him a job or loss of admiration or anything. Flat earthers provide fodder for Twitter jokes, so at least that’s a service, lol. But once it bleeds into politics and governmental structures it gets scary quite quickly. Now we’re talking people’s lives. Look at how many people have died in the US because they believed Trump’s lies about Covid? We’ve probably had at least 100,000 unnecessary deaths because of that madman. That’s tragic.

BuzzFeed compiled a list of funny tweets about it. I’m happy that they included Michael Spicer’s hilarious video. I love him!
