Variety article: SourceInteresting that DS did more money (surely the IMAX theatres) but wasn't number one because the admissions. A lot of countries count the admissions instead the actual money.

It's a forecast for the weekend so it's not a fact yet but it's positive, of course. We will see tomorrow.

Yes, you are correct sgev, it is a forecast but as a you said it is a positive sign indicating the relative strength of DS in Japan. Especially since the previous forecasts of BO were pretty close.
Can't wait until the actuals come out for this.
BTW: domestically DS seems to have received a bit of an uptick in BO in the US and Canada markets. And there has been a slight increase in theatre showing it as well. Meanwhile Fantastic Beasts has now dropped below DS dramatically on the charts for daily BO hauls, although it is still ahead overall domestically (and of course WW as well). I wonder if they will be going to secondary theatres like DS did to give the movie a boost?

From the Box Office Theory Japan boards -
Here are the actuals for the past weekend for the top five movies (from the same board) -
Boxoffice Mojo has DS listed for Japan market still at $9.677 million so you can add another $3.2 million to the world wide totals shown there - Now stands at $676.6 million WW approx.

Very impressive totals for Doctor Strange! I'm happy with this box office result. I never really predicted anything specific, but this is very good. Interesting that DS did more money (surely the IMAX theatres) but wasn't number one because the admissions. A lot of countries count the admissions instead the actual money. I think they should count both. I mean box office is what films like these aim for, but admissions are a better show of popularity. We count by admissions in Finland, not BO. Probably cause the ticket prices fluctuate wildly based on the day, the time of the day, what screen the film's on, how long it's been in the cinemas for, what genre it is, what country it's from, plus about a dozen other reasons some of which are completely arbitrary. Not to mention 3D which is of course more expensive, and 4K (?), and some "Scape" theater whatever that is. Until we get at least ONE bloody IMAX theater I refuse to pay extra for any supposedly experience enhancing thingy. Gimme IMAX and I'll pay the extra, but for nothing less. Ok when I see films with my kid brother I acquiesce to 3D but that's all lol.

Doctor Strange was my first (and only) time seeing a movie in IMAX 3D. I also saw it in regular 3D and in plain old 2D, but they paled in comparison - literally! The IMAX version was so much brighter and clearer, and certainly worth the extra money.

The IMAX version was so much brighter and clearer, and certainly worth the extra money. I've never seen an IMAX movie, never having lived in a country that would have an IMAX theater. But yeah I've heard it's much better! Although to be fair, I don't like all this new hoopla: hate HD TVs cause I think they make everything look like a home video (a very very high quality home video, but still) and the 48fps thing that The Hobbit had was just terrible. And I hate 3D. But IMAX seems something that actually enhances a film without stripping it off everything I consider cinematic. Most films have been digital for as long as I've been frequently attending movies, but I still love those films that were shot and screened on actual film and had those spots in the images and made the whirring sound the best.

I guess it's like listening to records instead of CDs. If you were around when people listened to records - like I was - you got used to the scratchy sound you eventually got when you played a record too many times. I had an album that skipped in a couple of spots, and to this day when I hear those songs anywhere, I expect them to skip in those exact spots. But they never do, and it's a bit sad.
