I recently watched it again. I think it's a classic!
Also the guy who inspired Hannibal Lecter is from my city! LOL! I kind of knew the story beforehand because my dad told us about it because he remembered it that when he was a kid he saw the police and a huge mob in the place where they found the body of his victim! Then he read about on the newspaper. It was far away his house but kids apparently were very independent then! Or at least he was! He knew everywhere! And it was a huge tabloid scandal! He did not told us all the details when we were little but the doctor wasn't a cannibal nor a serial killer but it was still shocking because he dismembered the body with a lot of precision. After all, he was a doctor! And apparently he and the victim were gay lovers so you can imagine it! I think the story was mostly forgotten with the time. Except by my dad who told us about it every time we passed that field! Every time with more age appropriated details! At certain moment, it was kind of repetitive and you know as teens we were: "Stop it! You told us that story before!!!" Then years after the movie, Thomas Harris revealed he based the story on that freaking guy!!! And my father was very proud of himself and told us the story... again!
It's such a creepy story but somehow it become a sweet memory for me! My dad had a very twisted sense of humor and he was clearly impressed when he originally heard about him!
EDITED Here is a link to a biography of the "real" Hannibal Lecter,

EDITED 2, I forgot the most dramatic part... according to my dad: the tabloids at the time claimed the crime was discovered because a cow! Supposedly the animal was eating some pasture when it dug out a box with the body! That wasn't in the movie! 😉
