Hopefully this movie will be the masterpiece we all want but TBF Jane Campion is the kind of filmmaker that big festivals would always fight for their last work, especially if it’s her first movie in more than 10 years!
It seemed to me that she and co. really want/wanted to released it at Cannes. She is a favorite there and this movie was practically planned there. Roger Frappier said they met first there to negotiate the rights and to talk about the script. Then they presented it and sold it to Netflix there. I’m almost sure that was the reason BC was there in 2019, to promote it for possible buyers.
But it would be nice that wherever it’s released it’s as a main selection. We will see what happens.

The text of the article reminds me to their other article about how the movie will be one of the best collaborations between actor and filmmaker this year but their “actors” were just Dunst and Plemons. At least BC is mentioned in the tweet, I guess! I know they are huge fans of them and practically ignore that BC is slightly more popular than them (more a “star”) in the real world but they also doesn’t have any idea of the kind of character BC is playing in this film. It’s HUGE!!! Much bigger than the ones by the other two. I’m not predicting he will win awards and that the other two will be ignored. It could be the other way around! Although if for whatever reason BC fails the film fails with him because his character *is* the film! But saying they star the film and that it’s a collaboration between just those two and Campion is like saying that John Malkovich and Barbara Hershey are the stars in Portrait of a Lady and that Nicole Kindman just “also stars” in it. And I would dare to say that both Malkovich and Hershey had much more interesting and meaty roles than Dunst and Plemons here! Anyway, we are all fans in fandom wars nowadays, including “serious” film writers, I guess. I still find frustrating when outlets doesn’t get their facts right! And TBH I’m a little scared of the reaction of some fools in Film Twitter when they discover that their beloved Dunst isn’t the “star” here! EDITED By the way, maybe it’s the fan in me who is reading too much in this piece but I immediately thought in their other article about collaborations between actor/filmmaker and they claiming this film is a collaboration between Campion and Dunst/Plemons. BC reduced to just a co-star with the rest of supporting players. Again, that’s not the case.

I had the same thoughts sgev, after seeing this. I guess they’re going to be surprised once the film comes out, lol. 😉😂

I’m actually fearing they reacting bad on Twitter and deciding the film is bad or BC is bad beforehand just because it! LOL But TBF the few people who read the book and admitted that BC’s character is HUGE (there is at least one Dunst fan who is still hoping Campion enlarged her character and she being some kind of co-lead) on Golden Derby, seem cool about it but I still remember all the bad faith during The Imitation Game/Sherlock award campaigns! It was awful!
Also they both are wonderful actors but I think BC is nowadays a much bigger star than them. The only reason someone would think they would have a bigger role than him is because Dunst is female and Campion usually do films with female leads but a professional journalist should had read at least the announcement of the movie in which Campion herself said this is her first film with a male lead. And again what a character her first male lead has! They just doesn’t have an idea!

Of course there’s going to be complaint and bitching. It’s Twitter, lol. I mean there’s still folks on there really vocally upset b/c Tony Stark died, and he’s not even a real person.
Just imagine the fun we’re going to have when they find out BC is the lead! ☺️

Well, yes. But also some of those fools write for Indiwire! LOL
I’m also sick to see this film reduced to an “award” movie. I think it’s more the Netflix factor than the always edgy Jane Campion. It certainly would had been even more quieter if Netflix wouldn’t had bought it. I would like to read much more meaty stuff about this project than just silly award predictions. Well, in this case they are predicting Cannes.

Can you explain why Venice is preferable over Cannes? And is it being in or out of competition better or worse for a movie? (Sorry if these are dumb questions - I don't know much about this sort of thing, but am eager to learn).
