Another thought about the DM stupid piece, why far right people think that anyone who they doesn’t agree with is extremely angry, screaming and crying? It’s so silly but someone actually said that Campion shouldn’t have had THAT reaction to Sam Elliott’s opinion. The thing is there isn’t any reaction! We don’t know Campion’s reaction! She hasn’t said anything about it! But that person was already criticizing her for being hysterical about it! And they did the same with BC! I won’t watch the video but some conservative site published a YouTube video claiming BC went mad and posted a photo of him intentionally overacting and screaming for a comedy sketch! The true is that he was very calm and looked genuinely perplexed for the indeed “odd” Elliott’s reaction to the film! He didn’t looked nor sounded “mad” at all! The next second on that video, he was cheerfully talking about It’s a Wonderful Life and Jimmy Stewart!
On the other hand, Elliott sounded kind of mad and angry. That’s why it was so odd and bizarre! The DM comments also always read like angry people crying over other’s people lives and, in this case, taste on films!

I won’t say it’s something exclusive of just one political side but I think it’s something that denotes insecurity and delusion. They are practically fighting with someone that only exist in their heads! It’s very easy to win those “debates” in which you just fabricate your rival statements and reactions in your own head!
Another crazy comment I read, someone was posting MULTIPLE times that the movie bombed hard in theatres. They posted the speculative number that Indiwire thought it did in the pair of screens Netflix screened it during a weekend and claimed it was so bad that it was immediately pull out of cinemas and uploaded on Netflix! Lol It’s like… I don’t think it works like that! But also they think that old Western Hollywood movies are history books and that homosexuality didn’t existed in America in the XIX and early XX century!

I just saw someone praising the film but saying it’s not a western but a thriller and as such is great but as a western is bad because it doesn’t have the authenticity of, for example, Spaghetti Westerns! Again, the guy at the end praises the film but he is also incredibly ignorant about traditional westerns AND spaghetti westerns! They were never authentic! They fake and yeah, they were gritty but more pulp than truth! An example, they really think women dressed like Claudia Cardinale here? Of course! TPOTD is more accurate even if it wasn’t shot in Montana! Not just the clothes but the way people behaved, talked and the historical authenticity, in general, is much more on point than a lot of beloved classical westerns! Including the “daring” ones! I get that it doesn’t matter at the end because they all are fictional films not documentaries so they don’t need to be real but it’s surprising how many Americans, including Sam Elliott, believe the myth was the real deal. It’s not difficult to see why questioning it seems such a big insult for them! And yeah, TPOTD maybe isn’t a Western but it’s a lot about people enamored with the myth and how that myth was other much different thing that it seemed to be (Bronco Henry!)

These folks are going to lock down hard on this particular myth, because it plays so heavily into the American dream than anyone, if they pull themselves up by the bootstraps hard enough, can become someone like the past orange president. It also plays into the myth that anyone can pick up a gun and be a hero.
This is a hill they will die on because if they admit that the real truth/real history is terrible, then they will have cognitive dissonance so hard that whatever tiny brains they do have will turn to liquid and pour out their ears.

I live in the American west and I have to say I always dress like that when I go out to milk the chickens, chop hay, and wrassle me a beaver. It’s comfy and practical. 😌
