What about Moonstruck? Nicolas Cage was perfect in that part! I love that movie, and it's one that I can watch over and over and never get tired of it.

I think this is the first year in ages that I haven't seen any of the Oscar nominated movies. I never watch the Oscars anyway so I guess it doesn't matter 😀 I'm going to see La La Land at the weekend. It's not my choice but a friend wants to see it so I will give it a go. I love those old Hollywood musicals like Singin' in the Rain & Guys and Dolls. Somehow people breaking into song seemed to feel natural in those. I've not liked any modern musicals though.
As for Mahershala Ali, I haven't seen Moonlight so I can't comment on his acting in that but I thought he was superb in House of Cards.

Somewhere back in this thread someone said they've yet to be convinced by Ryan Gosling. I thought "yes!" someone agrees with me!
I find the general reaction to him strange. Especially with regard to his looks. I'm not saying he's ugly but neither is he this tremendously handsome Adonis he seems to be regarded as. I think he and BC are pretty similar actually. Both attractive but not with "cookie cutter" movie star looks. But RG seems to be regarded as the archetypal heartthrob whereas BC is nearly always described as "quirky looking" or something similar.
This isn't a BC v RG thing. I'm just using it as an example to explain my mystification at the reaction to RG.

I'm disappointed season 5 isn't premiering until May, normally it's up in March. To clarify, I thought he was great in Moonlight as well, but I thought Harris was even better. I only noted this because Ali is the front-runner for all the awards he's been nominated for but Harris doesn't seem to be for hers.

I don't think Benedict and RG are similar in any way. Maybe neither one is classically handsome, but RG is generic-looking. Benedict really doesn't look like anyone else! And he has unique features that make him really photogenic. I also have never been attracted to actors with "blank" faces, where it looks like they don't have any thoughts. Benedict looks intelligent - maybe more intelligent than he actually is! And I love that look!

Never really liked Monstruck - it was OK but nothing more (and I normally love Norman Jewison movies and think he is a Canadian national treasure). And I hated NC in Moonstruck. It was the second movie I saw him in and that confirmed my suspicions (which began when I saw him in Peggy Sue Got Married) that he couldn't act. I also was forced into seeing him in Adaptation (because my sister wanted to see it for Meryl Streep) and Captain Coreelli's Mandolin (because my husband wanted to see the landscapes of Italy). And that was it for me - never again will I watch anything with him in it. I cannot stand his style of acting (which he seems inordinately proud of for some reason? ). He's a talentless hack IMO. But, hey, you can't like everyone - right?

I was saying that, to me, neither fit the classically handsome movie star mould yet RG is always referred to as though he does.

I think his loopy eye makes him cute, but he definitely isn't the "perfect adonis" but is wildly treated as though he is. He does have a hot bod though, kind of "universally hot".

Re: Nick Cage. I'm kind of the same opinion as you, Roverpup, but with slightly less hatred, lol. He's not a good actor and he tends to use those huge eyes for mooning looks instead of acting. But I will always be grateful to him for getting Johnny Depp into acting. 😃

It's because his claim of fame was rom/romcom movies. Notebook, crazy stupod love, etc. BC's is Sherlock. So = otherworldly.
