The problem was that people didn’t just think he was always playing the same character - they thought he was just playing himself in every role! He never got credit for his acting choices playing Sherlock - and so continues to be ignored by Bafta for that role.

That’s super bizarre! No one is like Sherlock in real life! Lol It’s intentionally a very fantastic character!

It's a non-human achievement to shoot out Sherlock's deductions they way Ben did. It's just not from this earth. I remember Mak Gattis talking about the long deduction at the fireplace in THOB where he placed his excuse on the script.... Has anybody a favourite scene of the first episode? (If we talk about ASIP...?! I'm not sure uf I got it right.....)

Is the one with the taxi driver, doesn't? I love BC's interaction with Phil Davis. Like in Amazing Grace, he was a (relatively then) young actor doing an intense scene with a very respected vet and looking extremely self-assured! I loved that for a moment he seemed more dangerous than the serial killer and very cruel (he stepping over his hurted shoulder). The series was kinda cartoonishly but he still used to find those moments of ambiguity.

Pardon me while I wax rhapsodic about Sherlock for an hour. 😍 This is complete rambling, so please forgive the unpolished nature of it.
Such an amazing show and a slap humdinger for an opening! Right away we get poor, lonely, drifting Watson and a very hungry Molly (look at her eyes and her focused intent when she asks him out for coffee - the lady knows what she likes!), H being purposefully clueless and only focused on his corpse lashing. The instant interest and attraction between W & H (take that as you will), and we’re off.
The overhead shot of H as his nicotine patch(es) kick in - the groaning exhale, his eyes flying open. Omg. That shot will live in my head for the rest of my days. It’s the exact moment I fell head over heels for BC (although he’d sparked my interest in Van Gogh PWW). So fresh, so sexy! So young, lol. Honestly, he looks like a baby in this episode, smooth and seemingly newly born.
I knew that he really had it when he started making *noises.* You know, he grunts, hums, sighs, growls, and blithers like normal people do. Most actors don’t bring in that level of communication but BC is so attuned to his characters and makes them natural even while inhabiting this strange, ethereal, gorgeous, inscrutable, dangerous beast of a man.
Others have described beautifully how astonishing BC is in this character, how bright, light, bouncy, and quick, and what a travesty it was (and continues to be), that he never won a BAFTA for it. A terrible oversight, to be sure, but at least it blasted him onto the world stage and great good has come of that. But I’m sure he was disappointed. 😕
Mycroft, trying to be all mysterious (coat collar not turned up but lethal umbrella at his side), dragging W into an abandoned warehouse and plying him with money for favors. I really adore Mark Gatiss as Mycroft, he’s just so whiny, delicate, fussy, and perfect. Long suffering, would burn down the world to save his little brother but wouldn’t admit his affection even if it might save his own life. His superiority countered by the wonderfully earthy Mrs. Hudson (rip Una, so wonderful she was as not his housekeeper), as somebody who wouldn’t burn down the world to save Sherlock, but would make everyone a pot of tea and some biscuits while they waited for H & W to save each other.
And to top it all off, the sublime silver fox himself, Rupert Graves as the dim, needy Gavin? Geoff? Giles? Lestrade. Perfection in casting, all of them.
Can we talk for a minute about Martin’s portrayal of Watson? I know people think MF doesn’t have much in terms of character acting (and working next to BC this is brought into sharp relief), but damn, he slays as Watson. He’s not a cute, angry kitten (as those on Tumblr would have you believe). He’s a deeply disturbed, violent alcoholic who is impressed by H but doesn’t take (much) crap from him. Sure, they develop their own relationship contract, so to speak. W abuses H physically and H abuses W psychologically (both indulging their sickness with each other, chasing their individual adrenaline highs through their cases), but there’s so much affection and admiration between the two of them it’s lovely to see. I am SO glad the writers didn’t woobify them over time. Letting them grow instead as people yet still retaining that thrill seeking core that defines them. That mushy crap is better left to fanfic and the internet.
When Donovan says “someday there’ll be a corpse lying around and Sherlock Holmes will have been the one to put it there” (paraphrasing), but by the end of the ep *Watson* is the one who put it there should have tipped everyone off as to how dangerous he is (and some foreshadowing there with the penultimate episode). But people still like to think Watson is just some short cutie. I don’t understand it - do people not watch the show? (An aside about Donovan. She was so good in that role that I really took a dislike to her [as we were supposed to], and my dislike transferred to the actress! I’ve never had that happen before. Quite interesting.)
I’m also glad MF didn’t pull a Nigel Bruce with his Watson, all bumbles and “Jolly good, I say, what, Holmes?” MF’s character is deep and very complex, roiling with repression and insecurities, certainly a match and a counterpart for BC’s confidant, mercurial (and also repressed) Holmes.
The mystery is solid and approachable and (for once), well written. Things sort of skewed out of control during the last season, I thought, bouncing from here to there to avoid the MANY plot holes, but here they got it just right. The only quibble I have is H throwing away the pill at the end. Surely he would have taken it to the lab and tested it, if only to prove he was right.
And all the rest- damp London in all it’s teeming glory, the wonderful Phil Davis adding a hefty amount of true sociopathic darkness, Paul M’s brilliant, ground breaking direction, etc.
I know it’s fashionable now to dunk on this series but it’s unique and well deserving of the accolades it received. Yes, it may have jumped the shark during the last episode but that’s okay, too. Not everything is perfect nor needs to be. Well, with the exception of BC, of course. I’ve never seen him strike a wrong note in his work. Not once. But maybe I’m biased. 😉

I had such high expectation for Sherlock the first time I watched it, and it was more than I ever expected. The final shot of ASIP, with Sherlock and John walking in sow motion as the Sherlock music plays, is absolute perfection! I was in love from that moment on.
I remember telling everyone that it was by far the best tv show I’d ever seen, and it was even so much better than most movies. It actually ruined tv for me for a long time because all other tv shows seemed so bad in comparison. I just wanted to watch Sherlock over and over - and I did!
I also remember thinking that the first episode might have been a fluke, and maybe the subsequent episodes might be just as boring and ordinary as everything else on tv. But No, the show just kept getting better.
Someone posted this on Twitter for Sherlock’s anniversary today. I never thought of this scene quite this way before!

Haha that was part of the JL conspiracy group. WHY would they film it that way if that’s not what they were alluding to?

(If we talk about ASIP...?! I'm not sure uf I got it right.....) Great question! For me it’s probably the Pink Lady deduction scene. Sherlock at his brilliant performative best, the start of Holmes and Watson’s work together with John going from awkward “WTF am I doing here” to snipping at Sherlock for being Sherlock and Lestrade commanding the crime scene but folding in the face of Sherlock’s audacity. That scene also has one of my favorite BC line deliveries ever, on kind of a throwaway line: “No, she was writing an angry note in German! Of COURSE she was writing Rachel!!” Plus BC’s stage, movement training showing when he lifts his arms slightly while spinning to maximize the drama of his coat. Also, I loved Molly’s presence, Sherlock’s acrobatic utter disregard for norms around furniture and Paul McGuigan’s gorgeous visuals and direction.

I love loads of random lines from ASIP!
Stamford: “Yeah, he’s always like that”.
And
Sherlock: ”I’m not a psychopath. I’m a high-functioning sociopath. Do your research!”
And
Sherlock: “Would you like to see more?” John: “Oh God, yes!”
And really everything in between!
