Age of Adeline had an interesting premise, but the film was.... meh. Haven't read the novel though. I wouldn't be surprised if Haig had written the novel with Benedict as the model for his hero, lol and it could be an interesting project. However, much as I am glad he develops his own projects, I would like to see him being offered roles in some prestigious upcoming films by great directors. It does begin to seem like he has to create by himself interesting projects because good enough offers are not coming.

Me too! In fact, time travel is the only type of science-fiction that I can tolerate, and the romantic ones are even better. Quantum Leap is still one of my favourite tv shows ever.
Even earlier than Somewhere in Time, there was a TV movie with Lindsay Wagner (the Bionic Woman). I couldn't remember what it was called, so I looked it up. It was called The Two Worlds of Jennie Logan, from 1979. Lindsay Logan finds an old dress in the attic, and when she puts it on she's transported back in time. I remember that I loved it so much, and that I thought Somewhere in Time copied it and wasn't as good.
Kate and Leopold wasn't very good as a romantic time-travel movie. I've avoided the current tv shows until I'm convinced that any of them are worth my time. I have my fingers crossed for How to Stop Time!

I really disagree with this statement, which seems to puts a very negative spin on the news that he is finally developing the clout to develop his own material now. There isn't any downside to this as far as I am concerned. This is the ideal time for him to procure material for burgeoning Sunnymarch. He has secured a multi-film deal with DS (Disney) and if rumours are to be believed will be paid handsomely (in the range of $15 million) for the sequels. And Sunnymarch is associated with an established outfit in Studiocanel with a lot of irons in many fires. This is also an astute business decision on Sunnymarch's part. EDIT: Re-reading the announcement of the new "Time" project I realised that Studiocanel is financing this project entirely so it is not a case of BC/Sunnymarch doing it to give BC work. This is absolutely a case of Sunnymarch getting into the deal to give BC a stronger say and more $$$.Here's another thought - perhaps now those "great directors" will be coming to him rather than the other way around? I also think it is clear that he wants to make sure he stays anchored in London (or close as possible to it) when his family is young. Often agreeing to outside deals would mean being away from home and family for longer time periods. I remember clearly M.J. Fox being interviewed about why he got out of films and more into TV work and he specifically cited that he hated being away from his family (it really struck home when he was in NZ filming The Frighteners). When Cumberbatch develops his own material he has more control right from the get-go so he gets to dictate the terms from a much stronger vantage point. All this Sunnymarch development doesn't really come as a surprise. A few years ago he said he wanted to get Sunnymarch off the ground and get involved with producing. He also said, once he had a family they would take precedence over many other considerations - and they have. And besides we don't know what he has brewing behind the scenes - no one even had a whiff of specific projects with Sunnymarch until all these announcements. I haven't seen one credible source indicate that BC is starved for offers. Not one. It may be that his own focus is turned towards establishing Sunnymarch as a player in the film/TV scene, and staying close to home - and other offers just don't fufill those requirements at the moment. :-))

I haven't read the Time-Traveler's Wife books - just watched part of the ghastly movie. I remember looking on with secondhand embarrassment, thinking "What have they done to Eric Bana's career?"
When they talk about a love story spanning centuries, with a man who never ages, I can't help but hope that, at some point, the female love interest paraphrases my avatar, Bette, in All About Eve - "He looks 41. He looked 41 two hundred years ago; he'll look 41 two hundred years from now. I hate men!"

After the box office success of Dr Strange and the Oscar Nom for TIG there's no way BC is starved of offers. I think it's more that he's looking to the future and to having more control over how his career pans out. He wouldn't be the first successful actor to do that.

While I realise that most of the news reports of BC's latest project are all basically rewrites here is one that does have a sentence or two that is new - www.thebookseller.com/news/film-rights-pre-empt-matt-haigs-new-novel-cumberbatch-star-507676Sounds like AA and BC have been very busy reading material with new projects in mind for a while. Glad to see another friend of BC, Jamie Byng from Cannongate Books is also involved with this. Of course Byng (along with Shawn Usher) are connected to BC through Letters Live. :-))

You can't just, aww shucks, no good offers! I just make movie for me then *snap finger. Well, in BC case, it turns out he can. Am happy and proud for him, but I too wish for more exciting indie roles for him.

I guess he's initially going to star on the films/series he'll produce because costs and to get money and then he'll try something like Brad Pitt with Plan B who produces films but not necessarily stars in them.
