Further more where does this idea come from that they won't want to work with BC? I think producing his own movies to the extent BC seems to be doing at the moment only excludes those directors that are on the top of the A-list/regular Oscar contenders (people like Scorsese, Fincher, Villeneuve, Iñárritu, the Andersons etc) because they'll be too expensive for SunnyMarch. I would like to see BC work with Villeneuve and Fincher especially some day, but there are tons of amazing smaller directors out there.

Also, igs, those directors generally work on projects they create themselves. The exception maybe is Villeneuve. That is one of the problems, the most interesting directors like to develop their own stories. Anyway if the material is good they surely can get a good director.
OT: Did you see my comment on spoilers?

Ah yes sorry, I did. I actually noticed it afterwards, that it's just gone when editing. Also yeah, the most prominent directors develop create their own films, and obviously many successful directors are auteurs. Would be nice to see BC work with one.

I don't think "prestigious project" and "Oscar potential movie" is the same as "great director". At least I didn't interpreted it like that. I want him to work with great directors but TBH I'm very cynical about "Oscar potential movies" and "prestigious projects". In some ways it's great he is interested in doing TV movies for an adult audience because at least we know he really care for the project and it's not just trying to win an Oscar. The artistic interest in the project seems more genuine. At least to me. I would love if he do something with a Martin Scorsese of course! But I hope he is not ending doing just prestige Oscar movies like sadly a lot of British actor do. I personally would even prefer silly genre things to that!
About who is the one announcing it, that's not really important and it's not necessarily telling us anything about what happened behind the scenes. Yes, his company announced The War Magician but they didn't initiated it. According to te scriptwriter, he and some of the co-producers did it and after they offered the role to him his own company got involve in it; Melrose had been for years in production, again the scriptwriter said he was writing an adaptation for Sky Tv of just the two first books before SunnyMarch was formally created; even The Current War, again years in production, was finally announced days before of the principal photography with BC and AA having a executive producing title.

Well following TIG he went on Hamlet, then Dr Strange, then Sherlock and now TCW and probably a few other things I forget so his diary has been chock full. His next move seems to be to get his production company well and truly established - hence the slew of projects.
We don't know what offers he had to turn down in order to do those things. Workaholic though he is even BC can't do everything on offer.
As I've said before I've no interest in the Oscars or any other awards but I'm sure if BC wants to win an Oscar there will be the opportunity for him to have another shot at it.

"Prestigious projects" - that is such a loaded term. And highly subjective. It can mean so many things to different people. So is the term "great director". But I am getting the idea that I think you are looking for him to be involved with track-proven directors of some fame and projects that are conceived with Oscars in mind before they hit the trade magazines. I will respond from those assumptions...
I don't really know what was offered to him. I am not privy to that kind of information.
Maybe a "great" director did offer something to him and BC rejected it because of prior commitments? After what was widely reported about his loyalty to Hamlet vs. DS I think it is pretty clear he is the type of person who is willing to say "No" to tempting projects when already committed to other things.
Or a "prestigious project" was being filmed too far from his new family?
There could be any number of reasons that he didn't end up with the types of projects or directors you consider prestigious or great.
Maybe a film with "Oscar potential" was offered to him and he said no to it because he wanted to launch Sunnymarch over the next few years and wanted to devote his time to that - to do it right.
And as it has been pointed out "The Current War" is getting Oscar buzz, so maybe he accepted that one because it fit into the criteria that he has set for himself (doesn't conflict with family or other commitments).
Obviously we both are of the same mind when wanting to see BC enjoy a long and fruitful career. 😊
And if you look at his career since TIG in 2013, it isn't as though he has been just sitting on his thumbs waiting by the phone for the "Scorsese call" that never came. I would be concerned too if he had been idle during this time but he definitely hasn't. He has been very busy.
And some of this "busy" has been "prestigious" IMO. Like the huge commitment of Hamlet with one of the most dynamic directors of the London stage. Also like all his work in The Hollow Crown - again a rather prestigious series being directed by an enormous talent (and working with first rate actors as well). Those two things alone took up a lot of time and effort (especially Hamlet) in the years since TIG wrapped.
And let's not forget Sherlock (again a prior commitment that he was loyal to). He did TAB and Season 4 during this time. Granted, none of those things will net him an Oscar, but the Oscars isn't the only prestige that is in existence so maybe these projects were considered very important to him (and to a number of other people too).
So my point is, where since 2013 has he had the time to take up "prestigious" offers from "great" directors, even if he did receive them, and do Hamlet, film THC, twice return to Sherlock, and launch Sunnymarch and do more DS simultaneously?
It's pretty obvious to me BC has a personal plan for himself and it is mainly centred around his family and Sunnymarch at the moment. Other than that - who knows what he has in the hopper or what he has rejected because of commitments or family considerations? I do believe that all of this is driven by his priorities and not by lack of interesting offers to him. He seems to be the one in the driver seat now and I understand his recent choices perfectly.
All I ever ask is that I get to see him doing what he does best (be it from NTLive, on film or on the TV, and maybe *touch wood* someday live on the stage!!) and that he feels fulfilled in his work. Anything else is a bonus for me (awards, working with certain directors, working with certain co-stars, etc.). :-))

Gotta say I do love the headline on AVClub.com for the new movie: Benedict Cumberbatch to play very handsome 400 year old man. At least he's not being described with the usual words. Exotic, alien, strange, etc. This time he's just downright very handsome. 👍🏼😃
