It was linked to Weinstein and, of course, rape is a much bigger crime than destroying films but it’s still ironic that now professional critics are now angry at studios doing it to movies like Coyote when a few of them thought it was cool to behave like idiots on Film Twitter and applaud it when first Weinstein did it to other artists (for example when movies like the Grace Kelly bio failed and they also made fun of the creatives because they were sure their only intent was to win Oscars) and later directly linked artists whose works were destroyed by Weinstein to him and just didn’t cared about Scorsese himself saving it so they just accused the main star of being obsessed with the Oscar even when he was at this point making not just franchises (that aren’t nominated to teh Oscars) but more telling very daring TV work (which, obviously, isn’t nominated to the Oscars!)

At the TIFF premiere of The Current War, September 15, 2017. After the movie ended, I took this picture of HW in the audience. You can see the back of his big balding head, standing between two other men. That, of course, was before all hell broke loose and we found out the truth about that awful HW. So the movie’s release got delayed so many times!

I did say that The Holdovers was awfully familiar, but it goes farther back than 2013. I still haven’t figured it out.

How come these things only come to the forefront AFTER the Oscar noms come out?
It's as if this whole thing wouldn't have seen the light of day if The Holdovers wasn't highly successful in the noms.
That sounds like a shakedown to me.

That sounds like a shakedown to me. Perhaps the guy who is complaining just saw the movie or read the script in January. According to the article he first talked to the WGA in January. And they were discussing the situation.
I think the problem is Payne having read twice the script from this guy (which was also in the Black List) and then, after the second time, started working on the idea of a similar movie and, although he formally has no writing credits for The Holdovers, he said he was very active about its screenplay creation.

Apparently the guy won’t even sue them so…
I don’t think it will affect their chances at the Oscars because it’s too late but the timing is still nasty and Film Twitter just run with it (probably because the crazy Nolan fanatism?) even when it seems there isn’t a real legal case in it,
By the way, people who have read the script says that they aren’t very similar at all except because the archetypes.

Playwright Paul Zindel’s family sued Guillermo del Toro for The Shape of Water. They made public the entire script, pointing out that it was exactly like PZ’s play. The court decided it wasn’t plagiarized. I’ve never seen The Shape of Water, but when it first came out, I assumed they had made a movie out of the play I saw performed on tv years ago. How on earth could that have been a coincidence?

Thought the right people won. Didn’t watch the ceremony but saw some of the highlights today. Ryan Gosling was terrific in his “I’m just Ken” performance. Brought a bit of fun to the proceedings. Delighted for “proud Irishman” Cillian Murphy and really liked his acceptance speech.
