Everything is soon quiet! I thought it might be a good time to speculate, once again about what projects might filmed and when. June to whenever: Judging by Benedict Wong's comments, it sounds like he may start filming the next Marvel film in June. Anyone want to speculate where? August through at least October: Melrose. Patrick is a child in one of the episodes, so Benedict will only appear in four. I don't know what is required of him as a producer or whether they will film the episodes in chronological order. The Fall - especially November and December: promotion for The Current War. No word yet on which festivals it will show at, but it could be as early as Toronto. Telluride and Venice might be possibilities, as well. 2018: Does anyone want to speculate about the other projects? I'm thinking Rio might be next, just because the director, screenwriter, and co-star are already lined up. What does that leave? How To Stop Time, The War Magician, Rogue Male, The Man In The Rockefeller Suit, Smiley's People, Flying Horse, any others? Judging from the script and a documentary I saw about the fake Rockefeller, I kind of hope The Man In The Rockefeller Suit drops by the wayside. How To Stop Time and The War Magician all sound like they would require elaborate special effects and a lot of preparation, so it may take awhile to get them ready to film. I would like to see Flying Horse, but it sounds like a long shot. Maybe Rogue Male will be next? Has anyone heard anything about Guantanamo Diary? Do you think that will be a documentary or a dramatization? He won't have long to film his part in the Marvel film because of the scheduled start of Melrose series in August but I don't think that will be a problem because I don't think his DS role will be all that large in that film. As to where it will be filmed I would guess NY and/or UK... somewhere close to home or in NY where both BC and Sophie have a tight group of friends (and if the filming is a week or more I can see the family coming with him, like they did the last time). I am not a comic book movie fan so I don't really care about this project personally but I know it is good for the franchise if he is included in this movie. The Melrose books - I am excited about this one for sure! I can't picture BC getting involved in the production aspect of his company if he isn't going to be a "hands on" type of producer so I expect him to be fully involved in that element. I think your timeline for this one is spot on. I don't think the filming will be sequential - that is an absolute rarity in filming and it would drive up the budget considerably - I just don't see that being considered for a new company like SM. I would stake a considerable amount of money that they will be much more thrifty than to do something like that (that is if they are conscious at all about establishing a solid reputation in the business, which I would have to think they are!). Promotion for The Current War - again you and I are in complete agreement about this. And I am looking forward to this film and the promos that will accompany it. I love historical based biopic movies that take a controversial edge to them and this one fits the bill exactly for me! I am really interested in seeing the work of this director and I like JG as an actor as well. Of the further off projects I think I am most excited about Rogue Male and How to Stop Time. RM because I would love to see him in a role that PO'T was in and the story just gets me so interested because of the political/social aspects of it. Also it seems like something he really hasn't done before - an old-fashioned thriller with tons of angst!! And HTST just seems like such a out on a limb story (and I absolutely love films that fool around with the time continuum). But I also would love The War Magician because it is again based on a historical story (I don't care if artistic license is taken = I can fully accept that in a movie). And anything to do with WWII is right up my alley! The fake Rockefeller con man is one that I hopes get made. I just think he could do a bang up job with a role like that and again it is something really different from previous roles so let him take that sort of role out for a spin and see what comes of it! Flying Horses - I have my doubles that will be made but it would be something I would go see. His would be a supporting role by the sounds of it but still the part and the movie seem interesting enough. Smiley's People - Another one I have my doubts that will see the light of day (I think mainly because it has had such a hard time with financing so far). But for sure I would be enthusiastic about this one - so fingers crossed! The other one that I think that may be moved up is the newest acquisition - the one based on Sophie SIL's book The End We Start From. I think with the family connections (and Sophie being involved) it will get prioritised perhaps and move up more quickly than other projects. I can see that being made perhaps during 2018-19. Just a guess that is based on gut feeling and not any info. And I think the subject matter is fascinating so I hope it does get made. I don't even care if BC is in the film - it is great that if he (and Sophie) are co-producing it and I will be interested in how it fares and all turns out. This makes SM a dynamic company I think and would love to see projects like this supported and to flourish. And I would love to see Guantanamo Diary get made too. Again, a gutsy, edgy project that is the kind of thing that BC talked about using SM to bring to the table. I don't know why but I always considered this one would be a doc - it never even crossed my mind that it would be a dramatization. Maybe it was because of the way the write up on it was phrased, but it just seemed to shout "doc" to me. All of this seems indicate that all of this activity (the roles, the voice work, the producing) seems to be a fruition of his dreams for the company and I would love to see that vision play out successfully for him and all involved. I don't think he has voiced for The Grinch movie yet as well has he? I know those types of projects don't take as much time but it seems like he will have to do that still, so that is another project that has to be done. Again, I don't watch animated films so that project doesn't interest me in the least, but I do appreciate that there is an audience for those type of films and think it fits in with BC's plans to keep his career as diversified as possible, so it is all good. :-) Christ on a cracker! I just posted and then I realised that I forgot entirely about Rio!!! Yeah that project seems pretty done deal so it will probably be made sooner than later. That one interests me but not quite as much as the historical drama ones or the time story (Rogue Male, The War Magician, How to Stop Time) or even the one about the con man. But like anything he is involved in it is his acting that I am most interested in so bring it on!!! LOL! Just give me him up on the big screen or small, and let him at it. I'll be there! With bells on! (unless it is animated). :-))

I read cumberbatchweb tweet saying Benedict Wong said he will start shooting mid June so surely BC will film around the same date. There is a possibility he is working in it right now if he is in more scenes than Wong and surely he WILL be in more scenes than Wong! Also I read somewhere that they had finished the first movie and that they would begin with the second one until August but it seems that the news was fake which it's not surprising considering there is a lot of speculation and even lies around big Hollywood franchises out there. After that he obviously will follow with Melrose. At the end of the year and early next year probably more Marvel and if things go well, Rio, which sounded imminent (it's not just the script and the director but Deadline claimed they were preparing for an early 2018 shooting. The fact that he is involve with the production is more promising). After that, well there were reports they wanted to do The Man in the Rockefeller Suit soon but still not official attachment nor director. There is also Smiley's People and Gary Oldman saying there is a plan to shoot it next year. I understand Guantanamo Diary is a dramatization. Obviously he won't play the main role (when it was announced I swear I saw someone accusing him of whitewashing the main character on Twitter even when he was announced just as producer and there is not indication that he pretends to play the role! 🙄) but maybe there is a supporting role for a white guy there so who knows! It's a polemic project so probably the financing wouldn't be so easy. Rogue Male and The War Magician seems to be both in the script or developing the script phase and How to Stop Time doesn't even have an official scriptwriter. Flying Horse is indeed a long shot. It seems it's a discarded project. At least for now! I wouldn't be surprised if his next project after the ones scheduled is something completely new. I am more excited for Melrose, Rio, Smiley and maybe Rogue Male but you never know and something that didn't sound interesting at all can be the best thing and viceversa. EDITED: Here is the article about Guantanamo Diary. It talks about a script so it seems to me it's a dramatization, deadline.com/2016/04/benedict-cumberbatch-producer-on-guantanamo-diary-zero-gravity-1201735673/

Some of the reporting on this has been intriguing. In the original Hollywood reporter story, they said that. If true, each episode would be filmed separately, even though some of them share locations. Of course, that doesn't mean that the first book will be filmed first, etc. www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/benedict-cumberbatch-showtime-team-melrose-miniseries-981383 I also have assumed that it would be a documentary, but I could see it as a dramatization, too - not with Benedict in the lead of course. I doubt that he will appear in this one, unless he does some voiceover for a documentary version. I'm interested in Sophie's project, as well. I am assuming that Benedict will not appear in it since the story is about a mother and her baby. With a flooded London, there might also be some special effects that would need preparation before filming starts.

I suspect Melrose would be expensive considering that a big American cable network is involved and the locations. They plan to shoot it in the original locations they aren't searching for a cheaper alternative like a BBC production would do!
Someone on Twitter said they will start the shooting in NY but she didn't post any source so I'm not sure it's true. BC should be involve in those scenes if he will play Patrick in his twenties but also as a father in the fourth book.

About Melrose. If I were producing it, I would want BC in all five episodes, and use his star power. I'd do the child stuff in flashbacks.

A documentary can have a script. If this is a documentary, it will not be an observational filming of events as they happen. It will describe events that have already occurred. Even if it consists only of excerpts from the diaries, those excerpts will need to be chosen to fit within a structure designed to best tell the story in a coherent way. Since Mohamedou Ould Slahi has been released and the filmmakers will, presumably, not have access to Guantanamo, they may include reenactments, as well.
They may need only a limited time in NY. Most of the action in book two takes place indoors, so they may just film a few outdoor scenes and establishing shots. Mother's Milk, the fourth book, seems like the most difficult to streamline into one hour. The locations are literally all over the map. Weren't the NY scenes mainly on Long Island? If kept, surely they will take up a minimal amount of time.

Each episode is a book and he is just a small child in the whole first one. Also it's important to establish his parents personalities and relationship to see why he is behaving that way in the next books so I can't see they doing that. There are a few flashbacks in the next books about his childhood but I can see they letting those scenes out or just mentioning them. Pure speculation based in the short time they have for each episode. I imagine they will center just in the main success in each book, at least for the first three: the reunion between "friends", the short trip to New York, the big posh party (although it would be interesting to see how much time they give to all the other characters in this one. There are a lot so if they just care for Patrick story it's the easier one to edit!) IMHO the last two are slightly more complex, the last one is about a funeral but it seems to me the flashbacks are too much and very relevant to the central story (maybe they could include some of them in the early episodes) and the forth is not just about a single day but a series of summer vacation trips over a few years.

That is why I think Showtime is really spending in it: it would have been very easy to shoot those scenes in any place but they will go for the real thing! The 80s Central Park and the Bronx scenes with the dealers should be interesting. There are a few scenes in clubs, too. If they are there, I can see them searching for real clubs. And yes, Long Island. South France should be expensive, too.

Apparently, the hotel where most of the action in book two takes place is based on the Pierre Hotel, a very swank, old hotel on Central Park East. I would think that at least some of the filming would take place there. The club he goes to is the Mudd Club, a famous punk venue that closed in the early 80s. I don't know if the facade is still there, but both the exterior and interior should be easy to recreate. I thought most of the drug buying scenes took place on the Lower East Side. I lived in NYC for some of the 1980s. Lower Manhattan has changed dramatically since that time. It will be interesting to how they portray it.
I assume they will film at least some of Rio in Brazil.

I keep confusing Rio with the animated bird film.
