In the wake of IMDb forum shut-down I joined this DW forum, but it never really caught on. So I wondered in anyone here watched the first episode of series 10 yesterday (or this morning here in Finland.) I'm pretty sure many of you have watched it at some point, I remember discussing it before. This is Capaldi and Moffat's last series. I'm looking forward to Chibnall but I wish Moffat continues to write for the show afterwards, every episode he wrote when RTD was show-runner was fantastic and better than any episode he wrote during his own show-runner era (with the exception of 'Heaven Sent'.) I wish Capaldi would have stayed longer but I suppose the new show-runner wants a clean slate and Capaldi wants to move on. I really like the new companion, Bill. She seems like an actual character who's excited about time travel and the universe, rather than some "larger than life" plot device or a smitten fangirl like pretty much every female "main" companion apart from Donna since 2005. Love her style as well. Still dislike Nardole a lot, the depth of his characterization seems to be "bumbling fool". I don't understand why he's traveling with The Doctor in the first place (I don't remember, did they explain how he ended up on board at some point?) He reminds me a bit of the more vapid female companions of the Classic era (Mel, particularly) who were only there to be scared and scream. 10x01 wasn't mind-blowing but a good episode for a new companion and series.

I watched it, but I'm not really a Doctor Who fan - or a science-fiction fan. The show has been on tv all my life, but I only started watching it when Peter Capaldi started because I like him a lot. I loved his relationship with Clara, so I'm having a hard time warming up to Bill. But I enjoyed the episode and I look forward to the rest of the season.

I only started watching it when Peter Capaldi started because I like him a lot. I loved his relationship with Clara, so I'm having a hard time warming up to Bill. Capaldi is wonderful. Unfortunately his era hasn't been as popular as it could have been, I think too many kids got used to having a young, cute Doctor with Tennant and then Smith so now they can't relate, and the companions really haven't been audience surrogates lately (Clara was such a plot device with the "Impossible Girl" thing.) I personally like Capaldi a lot more than Smith though. I have nothing against Matt Smith as an actor but I thought his Doctor was too zany. Swapping characters and actors around does make the show extra exciting which is nice. ther place with lots of discussions is reddit. DW S01E01 has more than 500 comments. Thanks Magdalena! I really have to learn how Reddit works...

I really have to learn how Reddit works... It is like any other forum. I didn't explore all reddit, just the Sherlock subreddit that now is kind of slow but you can read the old discussions, and I tried the BC subreddit (Cumberbitches) but that one is painful. The boards are moderated and I had no problems posting on the Sherlock one but on the BC one they put filters to new suscribers and sometimes your posts aren't visible or you don't see the comments to your posts so you can't engage in a proper discussion. I think it is generally a good thing that the discussions are moderated, for instance they control spoilers and also I didn't read the trollish kind of comments that were so usual on Imdb. I guess it depends on the moderators.

I watched the new episode too and I thought it was great stuff! It actually felt more like the Russell T Davies era than Moffatt, and that's very good as far as I'm concerned. Much as I do actually like Moffatt, and very much more than some seem to, I never fully got on board with his tenure as the Doctor Who Show runner. And it didn't help that I never much liked Matt Smith's take on the Doctor and I didn't take to his companions either. I much prefer Peter Capaldi but while I thought I was going to, I found Clara a disappointment too. I'm yet to be convinced by the new companions, but I'm agreeably surprised so far and actually quite liking Matt Lucas.
And I'm really looking forward to the next episode again, which is all to the good.
Nb....I've never investigated Reddit either

I watched it too and I think it was very good. In my case it was through Matt Smith's DW that I watched all the other series. I had tried the Ecclestone series but I didn't know what all was about and I found it rather silly. Also,I didn't like Mickey. I know that Matt Smith era is silly but the Ecclestone one seemed to me that it tried not to be. After I finished with Matt S. series I watched the rest and liked them. I liked Billy and the story as introduction to her as companion I think it was pretty good.

It actually felt more like the Russell T Davies era than Moffatt, and that's very good as far as I'm concerned. Agreed! Moffat is a fantastic writer - for Sherlock and Doctor Who - but sometimes his over-arching storylines are just way too convoluted and it drags the whole thing down. Like that before Bill every companion of his had to be a plot element rather than just a person, they all had some destiny-driven higher purpose. I love seeing someone who just wants to travel! I'd take off with the Doctor in a heartbeat if I had the chance, so I wouldn't need destiny to make that decision for me! I also wouldn't want to die 700 times à la Rory lol, maybe Bill will be a bit more regular human being. Also I love that she's lesbian, simply for the reason that while I love the RTD era in general I cannot stand the Doctor/Rose romance. The only story of series 2 (thank heavens 10/Rose only lasted for one series!) I enjoy is the Satan's Pit one (and School Reunion for Sarah Jane!) and I'm pretty sure it's because the Doc and Rose spent it mostly apart, they were insufferable every time they shared a scene. I loved Martha but the stupid lusting after the Doctor storyline dragged her down. Amy jumping the Doctor's bones the day before her wedding was supposed to take place was also gross and dumb. So unless Moffat pulls another Irene (or the Doctor regenerates into a woman) we won't have to worry about that! Phew!

I just noticed that our local paper had a big Doctor Who story on Saturday. Apparently, there's a Canadian working on the show now, so the paper got an exclusive interview. The story said that with Bill, the show is going back to the beginning. Since she's new to all of it and has no history with the Doctors, they're able to show everything through her eyes and explain things that they maybe haven't explained before. So it's all very new, while still being very old.
It seems to be a common theme with Steven Moffatt - he did the same thing with Sherlock, ending S4 with a new beginning for the two heroes.
