It is a comedy. It’s meant to be that way. And my understanding is that Hemsworth had grown tired of playing Thor as a romantic hero type and wanted to shake things up. Lots of the movie was improvised. So, yeah, it’s not like the other movies. I haven’t seen it yet, but the bits and pieces I have seen look great to me! Refreshing to do things differently.

The forced gravitas of last Marvel films (Captain America ecc.) was really annoying so it could be a refreshing change. Anyway, I am planning to go as soon as I feel better. I can well believe Hemsworth being tired of playing romantic lover, they had zero chemistry with Portman, who had it written on her face "I hate doing it!", lol.

I've angsted about this film for like 2 years, I thought the buddy comedy route was a dumb and frankly inexplicable route to pick for Ragnarök. But I've made my peace with it lol and and am looking forward to it now. It premiered almost everywhere in Europe Friday this week, but here in Finland we have to wait a week more cause there was a HUGE film release (the biggest and most expensive film ever produced in Finland) last Friday so they couldn't put a Marvel blockbuster to the same day, it would have been relegated to tiny screens. But still, now that I'm finally excited to see it I resent not being able to yet! That interview with Hemsworth and Hiddleston where Doctor Strange is mentioned in every question is hilarious lol.

All right, so I went to see it yesterday (am I the first here?). My no-spoilerish impression: it is a good popcorn movie. I wasn't bored (it happened with some of latest Marvel entries)and it was as funny as a silly film can be. B. cameo is very short and not really necessary for the plot - we have seen half of it in dr Strange credits anyway, but very cute all the same (Benedict and the scene). The main problem, as I see it, is that there are two movies in one (you can guess it from the trailer, so no real spoiler here): the comedy of Thor's-adventures-as-a-gladiator, which works quite well and your standard epic battle against the evil, which is yet again something we have seen zillions of times and frankly only for boyes who love special effects with some-not-so-convincing pathos. Cate Blanchett looks sensational, but is criminally underused - and the critics said Mad's villain in dr Strange had not enough personality!

Poor Cate. Why Marvel has so bad villains?
I don't think I'm going to watch it although I liked What we do in the Shadows.

MCU has always had a villain problem. Loki is very well-liked and I haven't seen much of Captain America but from the little I know I also think Bucky is great. But the great villains really end there, I don't understand why Marvel has so much issues with them. For Thor Ragnarök, I haven't seen it (unlike in most of Europe it's only premiering in Finland this week) but I already wish they'd scrapped the Hulk altogether and focused on the actual Ragnarök.

I remember someone saying on IMDb's forums that Marvel worries more for the heroes when DC do for the villains.

Sorry to say, but "Ragnarok" feels like an addition to the central part of the film (aka Thor gladiator). It is quite obvious director's heart wasn't in it, while he enjoyed doing comedic parts. Villains are regularly the sore point of Marvel's movies but in dr Strange they Mikkelson was able to infuse his character with some charisma and basic motivation, so I was OK with it. Oh, what I didn't like was Valkyria-cute-babe (you saw her in the trailer), although the concept for the character was good, IMO - I would just prefered if she were played by an older actress.
