Well that's your personal view Milemass and you're entitled to it. But it does not follow that it is wrong for other people to think differently or that it is any more innappropriate for people to say they're happy to hear BC has chosen to be a Vegan than it is for people to say great to hear he's a fan of Sigur Ross or great that he supports great Ormond Street charity. It's just people saying they like his choice. And why the heck shouldn't they? Since when did it become beyond the pale to voice approval of somebody's choice of diet. A friend of mine has been on the 5:2 diet and lost 20lbs so I said well done. Was that innappropriate too?

I took a look on the instagram and twitter of the gal whose posting is at the start of this thread and I have to say from what I saw of those two things, she seems to be a very determined vegan who seems to be on a mission to proselytize to the world the evils of eating meat and just trying to use BC’s name under the guise of congratulating him on his new lifestyle.
Again, I don’t have ANYTHING against vegans or vegetarians or any one who chooses to eat in a particular way, but I do have a problem when someone seems to be using his private decisions (that he didn’t publicize himself as a cause he supports) to further THEIR own agenda.
This isn’t the same thing at all as some fan of BC saying “Yay! He likes (such and such band) - so do I!!” Or “Wow! He loves olives! So do I!” Or congratulating him on supporting a charity that is a good cause (because he allowed a selfie while he was visiting a hospital).
This is a man and his wife having dinner and someone taking the info that a fan posted and using it for their own means to advance a cause they care about and have NO idea if BC supports that idea or not. Kate Louise Powell doesn’t seem to be a fan of BC’s, but she does seem to be heavily invested in spreading veganism. Period. That’s my ONLY beef!
If BC had come out and said “I’m switching to vegan because I think it is the moral thing to do.” and then Kate Louise Powell publicized his remarks on her twitter or instagram then I wouldn’t say a thing about it. The fact that he was pictured at a vegan festival didn’t bother me in the least. That was his decision to get in the picture with the fan and he knew it would be published on Instagram. Also the fans involved didn’t say anything about him endorsing the vegan way of life - they were just thrilled that he was there. And if other fans chimed in and said “Hooray for BC going to a vegan festival! Hope that means he is going to become vegan too!” Then all the better! At least they are fans who might be vegans. But Kate Louise Powell doesn’t strike me as a fan at all - she just seems out to use BC for his name and nothing else.
So my objection has nothing to do with veganism and everything to do with someone like Kate Louise Powell using BC’s name for her own good without his knowledge of it.

I don't have any problem whatsoever with the girl tweeting that she's happy to hear BC is a Vegan. She's entitled to express her view. She's neither asking him to, or suggesting he should be a spokesperson for vegans.
I just cannot see what the big deal is about it.
I thought people were allowed to express an opinion in our society.
I really wish I hadn't started this thread now. I just saw it as a lighthearted bit of "news." It didn't occur to me that it would lead to such negative reactions.
I would delete it only that would look like I was censoring the discussion and I don't want to do that but I will definitely add Veganism to my list of topics not to broach in future along with religion and politics!

Of course it's not inappropriate. It's just not something I would do. I know people who love discussing what they eat, and they welcome the opinion of others. But I've seen too many people waste away from cancer to be enthusiastic about anyone's diet.

Millemass said: I, unfortunately, have had a similar experience where someone had been away for a while and returned for a visit looking really good, having lost a huge amount of weight and having clearly dressed to the nines to take advantage of that. I actually knew she was ill, because her sister had told me, but she actually looked really well and I don't think most people knew different, so she as showered with congratulations for the weight loss and for looking so good. And from me too, for looking good at least, because that was what she clearly wanted people to see. All I did was exchange a sad look with her boyfriend over her shoulder when giving her a hug of welcome. I wasn't surprised when she died not long after. But it would have been unthinkable to have deliberately distressed her over some personal dislike of congratulating her for looking nice when she'd made such obvious efforts to have people remember her the way she wanted them to.
But weight loss doesn't just come as a side effect of cancer, and not to congratulate someone for weight loss as hard achieved through diet, would just be unpleasant! It does people good to get positive feedback for anything well done! And to deliberately want to hurt someone's self esteem by snubbing efforts that will have been terribly important to them, just because they've dieted rather than been ill, would be a horrid thing to do!
Personally, I don't give a flying stuff what BC, or anyone else, chooses to do in their private life, as long as other people aren't hurt. BC can be vegan if that suits him, for whatever reason. But I didn't at all like BC doing something else which could well have encouraged impressionable idiots to follow suit, and that was re the smoking! Does anyone know if he still smokes?

I can’t know for certain, but I think he’s stopped smoking. There was a shot of him smoking as Patrick Melrose. And one last year with an e-cig. Maybe he switched to vaping, which would be fine. I’m sure he’s thinking of Sophie and the boys, not to mention what it does to his own body. I would think he’d begin to have a hard time doing all that action work if he’s still smoking.
I remember when Johnny Depp quit smoking, tho, and he was so happy to take roles where he smoked so he could enjoy it, lol. He once said he wanted to have another mouth grafted onto his face so he could smoke more.
But Ben is more careful with his body now. He has a lot of people relying on him to take good care of himself. It continually amazes me the economy he generates. Look at the Glasgow shoot. So many people employed because of him.

Well, I remember those photos of BC and Johnny Depp during Black Mass London premiere and definitely BC looked much more healthier!

I’ve decided that this is method acting and that he is going on a rigidly restrictive diet during the filming of Patrick Melrose so that he won’t have to fake feeling a gnawing, barely controlled rage directed at himself, a cruel, pitiless god, and people eating in restaurants. Brilliant,

Do you think Tumblr would accuse the production of fatphobia?! I actually can see it!

That's what I had said. I'd like to know that weight loss was deliberate before praising someone for it. If that makes me sound like a heartless monster, then I'm sorry. I would actually never comment on someone's weight no matter what the circumstance. Maybe that comes from years of listening to coworkers at lunch talking about their latest diets. There was one time when a co-worker decided we should no longer have cake to celebrate birthdays because she was on a diet, and she announced this just before my birthday so I missed out on my cake. By the time her birthday rolled around, her diet was over so the cake was back.
And anyway, weight has nothing to do with looking good. Of course I compliment people on their appearance - especially when they've gone to a lot of trouble! And if we're talking about close friends and family, I'm 100% supportive in whatever they do. They're all beautiful and perfect to me!
