roverpup we were talking about Rush in the TOP100 thread, and it reminded me of this discussion. I remember once listening to its soundtrack and thinking about how similar one of its tracks (Lost But Won) is to Rains of Castamere from Game of Thrones. But then I did the math, the Game of Thrones track debuted in its 3rd season, so April 2013, and Rush premiered in 2013! So it seems than Hans Zimmer and Ramin Djawadi just happened to come up with a very similar tune at the same time. (Although according to YouTube comments only stupid plebs who don't understand music and watch trash TV think that but whatever, I am a pleb haha.) Starting 1:07 on the Rush track. Both are lovely scores by the way so worth listening to anyways! By the way, a BC connection to this. Sigur Rós made a re-arrangement of this same GoT song, they used it in season 4! It's cool too. The lyrics are by George RR Martin (the author of the books GoT is based on.)

Not familiar with Game of Thrones but certainly have heard of Sigur Ros through the Cumberbatch connection! I suppose I will be hearing more of Sigur Ros once we get to Iceland this coming September. I am knee deep in planning the trip now and it is shaping up nicely! Looks like we will be going from mid September to the end of the month - because after this winter I just can’t wait to have more cold weather!!! LOL! Not really a problem for me - I don’t really mind colder weather and I have a feeling the wonders of the country will more than make up for it. :-))

So I saw Shape of Water yesterday. And now I went back and read that synopsis for the Zindel play and honestly, it does seem extremely similar. And it's not like the concept is particularly basic!
I did like the movie though, but too bad the concept isn't as original as it seems.

Sorry for answering here your question on Twitter, @duskybatfishgrl
But yes, BC fans went ballistic not after losing to ER in the Oscars 2015 but when he lost to Kevin Costner in the Emmys in 2012! I think most fans were more mature and controlled in 2012 and the most extreme members of the so called fandom were more worried about his marriage and sudden paternity than him winning (Actually I think they were very happy with him losing because, well, they were all haters by then). ER was aggressively attacked but not by BC fans but by weirdos award fanatics!
But in 2012! Oh, boy! He was the critics favorite (like Chalamet) but he was an unknown against a big Hollywood star so no, he wasn't the favorite to win.Still critics were kind of campaigning for him on Twitter and I think fans were convinced he would win but then he didn't and people were very angry. At the beginning I thought they were all joking because the first person I saw to do an "angry comment" was a NYT journalist who had just interviewed BC and claimed to be a huge fan. Still, he was a professional, right? He wanted he won but he was being cheeky, right? Then when @cumberbatchweb asked for respect to the winner I finally understood people were not joking! They really thought he would win! Well, awards are not like that! They are nice but they are just someone's else opinion. You can agree or not with the decision but it's never a good idea to attack the winner. It doesn't help to your cause whatever it's. I think it's slightly worse today when people mention the accusation against Gary Oldman (that was investigated and discarded years ago). That's is just vile and goes beyond of the work itself.

Can I just say how much I enjoyed the Oscars last night? Jimmy did a great job, as usual, didn’t shy away from some topics and yet kept it flowing and got his Matt Damon joke in. The set was downright gorgeous! And while the message of Female Empowerment was a trifle heavy handed (Hollywood does tend to be unsubtle about it), it was well meaning. I liked the whole thing. The jet ski/Lake Havasu stuff was hilarious. And hats off to Sam Rockwell, who is brilliant in everything he attempts, starting with the first time I saw him in Galaxy Quest, one of the best movies ever made, lol. He gave a lovely, heartfelt speech.
And I am thrilled for Gary. This is long overdue. If I had my druthers, he would have gotten one back in the day for the fabulous romantic nihilism of Sid & Nancy.
Last question: how tall is Jennifer Lawrence anyway? Jodi Foster looked like she was about 3 feet tall standing next to an Amazon, lol.

I googled it and she was listed as being 1.75m which equals 5 feet 8.9 inches. In comparison Sophie Cumberbatch is 1.73m which is almost 5’ 7”. I am pretty sure Ben is 1.83m which is 6 ft. Jodi Foster is almost 5’3” so she is fairly short.

And remember that we almost always see these women in high heels! Jodie Foster was on crutches last night, so I'm sure she was wearing flats, which made her seem even shorter.

Wow! There are people on Twitter angry at Del Toro for saying he is an immigrant but being “white”!!! As someone said now we Mexicans are white? Great! Now please tell the USA Government.
Also there was another person saying people shouldn’t celebrate him but celebrate instead Indigenous and Black Mexicans! So you know that hypothetical movie by that hypothetical Indigenous Black Mexican deserved the Oscar more than Del Toro! Del Toro stole him!!! Or better: stole her!!! Bastard!!!
I wonder if Gonzalez Iñárritu deserved his Oscars. He is clearly very rich and privileged but his skin is so dark after all he is called “El Negro”? I guess he is alright. Cuarón is in between so we should ask all those so smart Americans how we should classify him and if he deserved awards and if can talk about being immigrant or not.

I just read a very silly comment by a film blogger/journalist on Twitter. He was criticizing the Academy because it had never gave the award to Best Picture to a foreign film (he forgot The Artist, although I guess that was a modern silent film so not audible French!). Of course, there had been some nominations in the main category so the rules allow it but it's perfectly understandable they would prefer American films because well it is given by an American institution. It's not a Festival but a national academy. It's the same with the Cesar which award mostly local French films or the Goya which prefers Spanish films or the Ariel, Mexican (the exception is BAFTA and we were talking about this yesterday. They should promote local talent but they prefer American stuff so they can predict the Oscars!) He is supposedly defending foreign films but the comment actually suggests that he ignores there are other foreign awards and foreign film academies that work in a similar way! I would dare to say the he actually don't care for foreign films!
Some people tried to explain this to him but a lot of them were agreeing! That's the level of criticism on Twitter and don't get me wrong the Oscars have a lot of flaws but this is not one of them! They surely are becoming more international in their selection of members and who knows? Maybe this will change the kind of films they will select in the future and TBH it sounds cool but again it's a national academy and it's fair that prefers local productions and that historically awarded mainly American movies.

I’ve ever thought of Oscar movies as American - I think they’re just English-language, not necessarily American. Then they also have the foreign-language category, and those movies could be American but not in English.
