I think we need to interject a little fun into the board so I was inspired by one of Duskybatfishgirl’s posts about her 4 favourite BC scenes.
I know it’s tough to limit them to a certain number but let’s say 5 best as a random number and it can be from any media (radio, audio books, movies, TV, film narration, animated work - god he has done so much!!!)
I’ll start it off but I hope lots will join in on this fun thread (please don’t critique other’s selections - just tell us yours and give reasons as to why you selected the ones you did if you like).
My top five -
1. The scene from The Hollow Crown with Richard on his way to kill Henry in the tower. He is mesmerising as a man possessed. We see his thought process as he heads to the tower - his feelings of resentment against his brothers and his physical condition. We also see the formation of his evil craftiness - the “artificial tears” that he is willing to shed to trick others. But the pièce de résistance is when he starts his tirade beginning with the lines “Why love foreshore me in my mother’s womb... “ and ending with “Like unto a CHAOS!!”. Still gives me shivers just recalling BC’s rendition of those lines!!
2. The scene from Cabin Pressure where Martin is interviewed for the position at Swiss Air! I absolutely love his nervousness and yet you can tell he really wants the position. I have listened to this bit a thousand times and every time I still laugh as it was my first at him rating himself to a decimal point! Just comedy gold!!
3. The final scene in Parade’s End where Christopher and Valentine are dancing together in his house. So tender, so joyous! He smiles as they dance around the room and my heart melts. The stiff upper lip finally breaks and relaxes. This is Chrissy at his most honest and it is heartbreaking and yet so fulfilling. It has been such a long arduous journey for him (and her) and it all the sweeter for the struggles they have had. And BC plays it so well!
4. The scene from The Child in Time when he is in the principle’s office finally coming to grips that the little girl he followed into the school isn’t his daughter. His grief is so heart wrenching. The gradual realisation on his face as he listens to the principle’s logic and knows his delusion is shattered. And his gasping for air as he sobs. It is so hopeless and yet it is cathartic at the same time. He moves onto a better place because of this traumatic event. He conveys the situation with all the emotional weight it can bear and all it needs for the audience to connect with this man’s grief.
5. The “This is your universe! Frankenstein!” Scene from the play. It is breathless in it’s power and message and the way BC delivers the entire scene is perfection! He is so raw as the Creature, so vulnerable and yet so frightening. The way he argues and uses Frankenstein’s own vanity and ego to get what he wants - love. Something that society has denied him because of their own hatred and fear of him (and what he represents). The character of the Creature really comes into focus in this extended scene and BC plays him to the hilt. It is just gobsmaking to see him on stage after seeing what he has been through in the previous scenes. You really understand the pitiless plight of the Creature and feel for him even as you quake at the thought as to what destructive cruelty he is also capable of. A real tour de force of acting!
Well, that’s mine - what’s yours???
:-))
