It's like RBG all over again, refusing to retire when Obama was in office and could have appointed a progressive Supreme Court judge. Then she died when Trump was President and the spot was lost to a conservative. They overturned Roe vs. Wade, and now women in red states can't get abortions, even when the baby has no chance of survival or the mother's life is at stake. A person's legacy can be irreparably tarnished by not knowing when to exit the stage, and those of us left behind are suffering the consequences. I saw someone on Twitter saying names to people who apparently were asking to Sonia Sotomayor to retire. I guess she isn’t “that” old. She is only 70! She easily can live 4 more years or even 8 but still, why to attack the critics who see what not just could happen in the future but what it’s happening right now. I hope she lives a long and healthy life but if sadly that’s not the case and Trump wins, then that’s another lost position for the Democrats and it’s not four years but decades of extremist Republicans owning the Supreme Court. The Democrats probably wouldn’t have the big majority even if they hadn’t lost RBG but you must defend every position and sadly that was all by herself. I remember that at the time, it was reported that Obama asked her to retire but she refused.

I'm seeing everywhere that Trump will be re-elected now due to sympathy votes after the assassination attempt. I'm not entirely sure. I mean, people should be voting for policies, not out of sympathy, so this event shouldn't sway voters. I can't tell if this is the internet wilding out or if it's actually going to play out like that when the time comes. To sympathise with him and not his victims, and after all the ways he abused his position of power...what an odd take.
Edit to add that I don't agree with what happened but, I don't think this should be the reason he's given that position again. I certainly can't imagine anyone feeling sorry for him when he has shown he has no feeling for the people he was meant to be serving (putting aside his personal relationships and the abuse inflicted on those people). Above all, I'm still trying to work out how anyone got a shot at him in the first place and where his security was. I'm still playing catch up on the news so this has probably been explained somewhere, but I find it baffling.

I think it really could help him. Of course, people who dislike him would not change of mind but what’s in play is not their votes or Trump’s fans votes but the votes by undecided voters. Those who doesn’t feel passionate about neither of the candidates.
It certainly is helping with the victimism mentality of his followers! It kinda “confirms” that there is a huge complot against their idol without any real world base but the secret service failed and there isn’t anything public about the shooter reason.
Also, Trump reacted in the best possible way for his image! I mean there was a horrible accident here during the last presidential election. One very strong storm with an unexpected tornado just formed practically over the stage of a political event. There were a lot of people harmed and some deaths. One of the three presidential candidates was on the stage. The only male and the youngest one! In was just a second but it briefly seemed that he pushed a woman before everyone run just minutes before the stage collapsed (all the people on the stage survived). It wasn’t something obvious. It depended of the interpretation of the viewer but it certainly affected his image. Especially on social media.
I think those are extreme situations in which no one knows how will react and they probably doest’t really say too much about the real character of someone because they are seconds and most probably the person isn’t really thinking coherently. According to the NYT photographer, the one who took the now famous photo of the bullet in the air, Trump reaction was pure rage. He was mad so he just raised his fist while screamed “fight” to the audience. The AP image, with a freaking flag above him and a perfect composition just sealed the deal.
So yeah, I think it helps to his chances with undecided voters who doesn’t hate him. He looked strong (even when it was just a second of time) while his rival is looking weaker and weaker every day. Poor Biden, he just got diagnosed with COVID today and canceled his events!

I’m terrified of what will happen come the election in November. If Biden steps down who are they going to run? Nobody is ready for that race, especially not Kamala Harris. After 8 years of hatred, misogyny, and escalating racism do they really think a black woman can win? I’m shaking in my boots with trepidation. 😬

You've explained it all so well, sgev1977. Thank you. There's a lot you mentioned that I didn't know about or didn't consider. It makes more sense to me now. I hadn't heard about Biden catching covid. Poor bloke. queenzod I don't think Kamala is popular enough to win, even putting aside her gender and race. It seems she was never someone people were happy to see as VP. At least, that is the impression I get from what I read but, algorithms are often at play and can paint a different picture. I was hoping both parties would put up new candidates but we ended up with the same mess all over again. I seem to be alone in that opinion, especially as Trump fans really, really want him back. The mind boggles. For the first time in a long time, I'm feeling the UK was more clear with our elections this year and that the choice made, while unpopular with some, is absolutely what was needed to steer us back in the right direction. People were just voting against Tory but I expect Labour will actually do more than anticipated to right the ship. Maybe it's wishful thinking but it makes me happy, lol.

The election is still over 3 months away, so Trump's terrible personality may erase some of that sympathy by then. It will be ancient history by November, as long as the conspiracy theories die down. They image of him with his fist in the air was instantly iconic, though. Watching it happen on video, the Secret Service keeps trying to cover and remove him, but he keeps popping up for more fist pumps.

I don’t understand how Trump can even do foreign policy if he wins. As a convicted felon he can’t even go to Canada, lol, much less at least 30 other countries. It’s nuts.

I don’t think he is very interested on foreign policy. He is an unilateralist not very different to other populist leaders like our actual president (who barely has traveled outside the country. Others did that!p for him) but also Bernie Sanders was like that. I remember a Mexican journalist interviewed him and was shocked about how so little he knew or cared for what was happening outside the USA. So it’s a trend for extremists from the right and the left: unilateralism and protectionism.
He doesn’t want to be the leader of the world. That role he probably thinks is better fitted by Vladimir Putin but his running mate believes that the USA should send their army to Mexico to fight cartels so that’s double scary!
I think that Biden was the better option then because he was seen as moderate when Sanders, who would never win an election, was supported by a lousy extremist section of the party. But he seems very weak now! It’s something normal and it will happen to all of us but it’s so sad to see it happening to the USA president and during a very difficult election. As someone said, I don’t doubt he still could be a President but he clearly can’t do a political campaign.
I heard an interesting podcasts about Harris. She apparently was a brilliant prosecutor before politics but when she went to Washington, all that identity stuff was in. Again, something popular on social media but never in the real world. She had the right identity (black and woman) and she just softened her persona to fit it: she apparently fought marijuana use as fiscal but that’s not something that people who championed her would embrace so she tried to hide it during interviews when asked about it and that made her look insecure and babbling with the press (when she had been brutal during trials!). She didn’t do too much press and when she did , she didn’t looked good. Actually, the journalists think she should had done more because they said that is what politicians do: a bad interview is usually forgotten when it’s followed by other good interviews. But that she was just hidden by the White House. Anyway, they think she just must be herself whatever she is and being brutal like she was as a fiscal against Donald Trump. Right now, some polls has her positioned a slightly better than Biden. So hopefully!

This is clearly a joke
There are also a lot of jokes about Hillary Clinton being unhappy with Harris (because she would be the first female president and not her?)
I found these comments ironic considering that according to specialists, Obama is leading the charge against Harris (read his long letter, he wants an election process) and the Clintons supported her.
Anyway, I hope they chose wisely and the process doesn’t divide the party too much. One thing is certain, social media is in their little bubble and in the same way they thought the reports of Biden quitting on Sunday was just the lying mainstream media, they know seem to believe that Saint Obama loves Harris and evil Hilary dislikes her when it seems it’s the other way!
