Wikipedia has a long explanation of "woke". Here's a part of it:

I define "woke" as becoming aware of problems affecting other groups and not myself. For example, I really didn't realize that black people in the US were disproportionately beaten, shot, etc. by police until the issue came to wide public attention in the last few years. I had heard of "driving while black" but thought it was more of a joke, or if it happened was only an inconvenience. It's an issue that didn't affect me personally, so becoming aware of it was like "awakening" to a new reality that I hadn't known existed. Then having learned about the issue, people say "stay woke" to mean not losing interest as time goes by. It's easy to forget again once the problem no longer in the news.

I also read the comments on the Instagram page and people seem really excited about the material! That’s great! One person said it was a real roller coaster of an emotional ride (the book). Sounds like a great starting point for a film. I am excited about this one and can’t wait to see what BC does in the role of the father.

Isn't the father kind of awful? I was just thinking the other day about one of my favorite BC roles, the creepy rapist in Atonement, and wishing to see him in another bad-guy role.

Yes, that's why I'm excited, too, that he's going to be doing this!
