The grunts and grumbles sound like BC, but the actual spoken lines don't...? "Mmmm...no." sounds like his Alan Rickman voice.

Yes, he sounds different. He is really acting the character and not just "selling" his own voice.
I'm surprised with the good reception on Twitter. I mean surely it will be a massive hit but "adults" on social media are very cynical with Illumination productions in general and then there is the nostalgic grown up kids who apparently absolutely love.... Jim Carrey's versión!!!! (He was great but the movie was definitely NOT! So, yes, it's a surprise to me it has fans!). A very few didn't like BC is not using his British accent and a girl called him "weirdo" (very mature!) but most people are very happy with the few words they heard. I liked a comment saying he reminded them a little of Boris Karloff's voice.

The Jim Carrey version was terrible, but so are all of the Dr. Suess feature-length films IMO. (NOT the original animated Grinch based on the book, obviously.)

I think the trailer is hilarious and the movie looks like it will be adorable. I've resisted checking what Twitter has to say about it because there were so many negative cooments when that little skating video came out during the Olympics. It amazes me that people loved Jim Carrey's version and think of it as the original! I saw it when it came out and it was more creepy than anything else - and it certainly wasn't close to being as good as the original cartoon which I love.
I agree that Benedict is doing a voice and not using his own. He's acting! I liked hearing the Grinch song updated and used. I'm still wondering whether this will be a musical like the cartoon was.
The highlights of the trailer for me: the Grinch in his underwear, drinking a cappuccino, fixing his hair.

Yes! It's watchable, I guess. I have re-watched it a few of times with my niece but it's a bad movie. I'm shocked that it apparently has a good number of fans! Maybe they were kids when they originally watched it and there's a nostalgic element about it but it's incredible! I was old enough to read reviews and believe me they weren't good, neither. I watched it at the movie theater anyway. The "message" about consumerism was done in a very silly way and the whos were unbearable, including the little girl! Its only charm was Carrey's charisma IMHO

I just read two more comments about how much they loved Carrey's movie! C'mon people! Why are you so proud of having such a bad taste and screaming it to the world?! 😉
Ironically very few mention Boris Karloff's short! His was the original! That's the one I watched when I was a kid!
Carrey's movie was a phenomenon in the USA but in comparison its international box office was more moderate. I think an Illumination movie could be slightly stronger in that regard. The character is more known now in foreign countries and the company's trademark is beloved by families around the world.
