The New York Times said this about Jim Carrey’s version:
At least they’re consistent! They hated the new Grinch, too. In fact, I think it’s the most vicious review I’ve read so far. I can’t believe someone could get so angry at a sweet little children’s movie.

Another very positive review: www.vulture.com/2018/11/the-grinch-review.htmlVery nice review although he sounded conflicted on Twitter! LOL The reviews are good enough IMHO. A few critics sound cynical but a good number of the negatives reviews actually sound like the critics doesn't want to admit they enjoyed it! It seems to me that WOM should be strong between general audiences.

My sort-of review: I went to see it tonight. It was exactly what I thought it would be - sweet, gentle, funny and visually stunning. It’s beyond me how anyone could find anything to complain about!
I watched it in 3D, but I think it would be just as gorgeous in 2D. I was pleased to see that there were lots of adorable little children in the audience.
I was a bit worried that there wouldn’t be any surprises after having seen so many trailers and clips, but many of those scenes were actually slightly different. I can totally understand why they made this Grinch less angry - in a scene where he shouts (using his full, deep, booming Benedict voice), the kids in the audience went silent. It was scary for them to hear him that way. I loved the songs and I’m considering getting the soundtrack - the Grinch even does a tiny bit of singing.
And yes, it made me cry!
I won’t give away any spoilers, but if you go see it, make sure you watch the first part of the credits. The animation continues and we are shown a bit more of the story. I’m wondering whether some of the negative reviewers walked out before they saw the credits.
I was disappointed that the theatre didn’t have any of those cool Grinch displays in the lobby. They’ve had the same one - for the Nutcracker - since I went to see Frankenstein. Maybe I’ll go to a larger theatre next time where they have more space for displays.
I did spend a bit of money, of course! I bought the Grinch hat (they had adult hats now - the last time I was there they only had the kids’ size). I might wear it to shovel snow! And I bought the Grinch Mini Combo - small popcorn, M&Ms, and a small drink in a Grinch cup with a collectors’ topper. I chose the regular Grinch topper, but they also had young Grinch, Max and “the little girl” (what the guy behind the counter called her).
Before the movie started, they had a trailer for some movie called Bumblebee (I think), and it was just a lot of loud crashes and explosions. I think it’s about a car that turns into a robot? It looks awful! Another trailer for an animated movie called the Missing Link looks really cute, though.
So I recommend The Grinch, no matter what the critics say.

I’m putting his entire article here as a spoiler that you really shouldn’t read until you’ve seen the movie. The writer went in expecting to hate it . . .

Well, that review confirms that what people hate about Illumination is the marketing and not necessarily the movies themselves! He went to watch it but was more than ready to write something “tearing this stupid kids movie limb from limb”.
I was trying to remember the Jim Carrey’s The Grinch meanness and The Whoes were so un charismatic that who cares what he did to them? But he was also very nasty with the dog. I’m not sure modern audiences would forgive that.

I think we will have formal reviews soon but I also read a post on Reddit by someone who claims to have watched it with the crew and cast (the date coincides with the posts by Jaime Camil and the Illumination writer) and said it’s at the level of Despicable Me (considered the best Illumination movie) or maybe even better. As counterpoint MONTHS ago someone said on Twitter that people on screen testings were saying it wasn’t good and that the best thing was BC’s voice work. In retrospective and having read reviews, I think both of those opinions were sincere!!! They both sounded sincere at the time (and a few things: time, place, past opinions matched)
