Toilet paper shelves at my local WalMart are completely empty today, here in the middle US. Everyone has their torches and pitchforks out for a local family who returned from Italy with the virus, then broke quarantine to go to a school dance. They closed the school the next day (which doesn't really seem helpful, because surely anyone who contracted the illness would be contagious for more than one day.) The rule here is that anyone with the virus and those they’ve been in contact with have to be in isolation for two weeks. A school here was recently closed for two weeks after a pupil tested positive after a mid term trip to Italy. Unless a person needs hospital treatment then the procedure is “self isolation” ie staying in your house. We seem to be very compliant on that so far. I’m just waiting to hear if the choir I sing in is going to suspend rehearsals as a precautionary measure. There’s over 60 of us and we sit close together for rehearsals. Plus some of the members are over 70 so getting into the more vulnerable bracket.

We almost had one case in my city. There were a couple of days of panic when a university student returned to school from spending spring break in a Italy. He didn’t feel well, so he turned himself into university’s health office and was tested. He remained in isolation until they determined that he only had a cold. But he was praised for doing exactly what he was supposed to do.

Certainly not a panic in our city in southwestern Ontario. Just went to the grocery store and there was LOADS of everything - hand sanitizer, soap, toilet paper, etc. I stocked up on TP but then I always buy lots when I buy that stuff, but nobody even gave me a second glance when I went through the checkout. I already have a BIG bottle of hand sanitizer that I have had for years and it's hardly used so I'm not buying any more (I prefer soap when I'm at home).
It's not like we are oblivious to the threat of the virus - it's the main topic of conversation in town - but there doesn't seem to be much in the way of panic, at least from what I've seen personally.
I haven't heard of any local cases, nor have I heard of any cancellations.
Thay may change if there are any cases found locally.

I only use hand sanitizer if I’m somewhere that it’s not possible to wash my hands. Thoroughly washing your hands with soap and water is more effective. But if you’re not near a sink then sanitizer is the next best thing.

Did you know that hand sanitizer has an expiry date? Last year I threw out several large bottles that had expired (because I rarely used them) and bought new ones, so I still have plenty .

You can also make your own sanitizer with a combo of alcohol and Aloe Vera gel. The mix needs to be 60% alcohol to be effective. I have a large bottle of sanitizer and some small ones for handbag and car. So that should last a long while.

People panic over things like this, and unfortunately with poor leadership that is more concerned with their “optics” than actually dealing with the problem, people aren’t reassured. Btw, Ellie, I saw a cute video of your president’s beautiful dog the other day. So cute! 😍 Yes “Brod” is so cute and he is almost as big as his master, our President. 😁 For those who like cute dogs, here is Brod gate crashing an official reception in the President’s House in search of a belly rub! extra.ie/2020/03/10/must-see/michael-d-higgins-dog-belly-rub

I spoke too soon about not having any cases here! The evening news just told us that a doctor working at the cancer treatment hospital in our city has a confirmed diagnosis. She’s 32. She had just returned from a trip to Hawaii and it was her first day back at work when she began experiencing symptoms. She had already started seeing patients that day. The news interviewed some cancer patients outside the hospital, and they were very nice about it.
To make this situation even worse, the news story said that this doctor’s domestic partner is a doctor at another hospital in town. He’s showing no symptoms, though.

They need to close schools, travel, and meetings all over the world at this point. Stop this thing from spreading further. The economy’s going to take a big hit, but imo better now and quickly than let it drag out over months.
If everyone just stopped going out for one month, we could nip this in the bud. But that’s not going to happen. 😑

They just confirmed that the case #9 in the country is in my city. A 50-something man who was recently in the UK ans Spain. There is this massive event next week with bands from all over the world here Some people think it should be canceled. Maybe the cases are almost insignificant here but I agree that it's not a good idea right now. Ten years ago with the H1N1, it would be canceled! Surely organizers will worry more about money, tho.
