Thousands of lives are going to be saved by shutting things down now. People should stay home as much as possible. I hope everyone stays safe, friends. 🙏🏻 I guess in a small country like Ireland (the entire Island is the same size as the US state of Indiana] it is somewhat easier to impose and monitor a partial lockdown than in larger Nations.

Haha I think it also depends on how many idiots you have running your country. 😂

What a difference a day makes! Our PM's wife (and other politicos) has been diagnosed with the virus, no hand sanitizer in our local grocery store, all hockey games at all levels have been suspended, schools will be closed for the next 3 weeks, and I saw a person buying about 6 boxes of tissues at the pharmacy!
Dan and I aren't really social people so self-isolation is second nature to us and we're retired so we are used to being by ourselves all day long. So that is pretty much routine for us. But we do have some interactions in the coming weeks that may be canceled. Dan being a diabetic and in his 60s is especially vulnerable so I am being especially cautious. No reports so far of any local cases of the virus.

I got emails from both Cineplex and TIFF explaining how they’re dealing with the virus. Both are pretty much telling people (staff and guests) to stay home if they’re not feeling well. TIFF also says that they’re asking audiences to maintain the recommended “social distance” of 6 feet (three empty seats) between them.

I saw the news about Uruguay and I thought about you!
Sadly here are too much rumors. One senator from my state accused the President of hiding information. It's difficult to know if he is sincere or not because well, he is a rich kid with an influencer girlfriend who has a lot of socialite kind of scandals. Also he quoted WhatsApp as his source! Anyway the president and our governor hardly criticized him today. At the same time, I heard those kind of rumors too from a close relative who talked with her doctor about the theme and I hear an interview by a proper journalist with an important doctor claiming there are at least 9 confirmed cases treated in his hospital but he didn't know if they will be officially included or not by the government. Minutes later the Mexican government announced 26 cases, 11 news but interesting enough they didn't included the second case in my city announced early today by local authorities (a 40 something man with a comorbidity and obesity who sadly is not so good. He got sick in Aspen) nor another one in another state that I heard about today. Tomorrow the number should be nearing 30.
My main worry is this feeling that the government is not doing enough. I remember that when H1N1 happened it somehow felt like everything was over the top when you barely knew someone sick with it! Surely the real numbers are much smaller now but for example there are all these massive events that authorities just don't want to cancel and it seems so wrong! Today there was a Ricky Martin concert and it was him the one who postponed at last minute. He probably arrived here! Next weeks we have a much much bigger music festival with a lot of international bands and foreigners visiting the city and organizers and government say everything it's ok. At the same time, cities are cancelling small events and private schools are suspending classes.

We had our first death here in Colorado today. An 80 year old woman, who probably wouldn’t be dead if our “president” had done what he was supposed to and started testing 2 months ago.

The incompetence and lack of compassion of the politicians is terrible. Here nobody was being tested on arrival and to my knowledge there still aren't. The four people infected came, three of them from Italy and one from Barcelona. One is a woman who was ill in Spain (she went to Italy and Spain)and returning to Uruguay, althoough she was aware of the situation in Europe, she went to visit people, to the hairdresser and to a wedding where there were lots of people. People are idiot. At least she is. The public university, which is autonomous, shut classes for a week as a preventive measure. I suppose it'll be extended if necessary. The classes had just started past Monday.
In the meantime the governement closed some frontiers but not all, forbid cruises, concerts, and football is going to be played without fans but, they let parents decide if they send their children to schools or not! To be fair, it is impossible to close the frontier with Brazil. Each city/town in the border its just separated from another one in Brazil generally just by a street. You cross the street and you are in the other country with no control.
And in New Zealand...

It just shows how, despite all our modern technologies and facilities, that mankind really is no match for the forces of nature. When you see how a virus with a 3% death rate has delivered Global chaos, just imagine what things would be like if it had a 30% death rate. Or maybe better not to imagine it. 😱
So many people being stupid and selfish and ignoring safety advice doesn’t help either.
Here in Ireland our Government has been very good on domestic measures such as shutting down schools, universities, public buildings etc but they’re really doing nothing to tackle the international threat. Our borders are still open to everyone. So far all but a handful of our 90 cases have come from people travelling from Italy - mostly Irish people returning from holiday there. But we’ve people arriving daily from many other nations with high infection rates. Yet still there is no compulsory quarantine in place.

I think it doesn't help to the situation that a lot of countries today have populists, "mavericks", "rebels" or plain all madmen elected as leaders. Again the government was far away for perfect when H1N1 happened (and without doubt the people leading nations at the time had a lot of the blame of what it's happening today) but the system worked good enough to at least not causing panic. We haven't seen the worst yet because this thing hasn't ended. Probably it hasn't even peaked!
