I watched a few minutes of the Oscar pre-pre-show. It’s too early for celebrities to be there, so they’re mainly showing clips of interviews and just standing around talking to each other. All six of the reporters/interviewers agree that Troy will win best supporting actor because he’s been so much fun during the campaigning! I don’t remember anyone ever saying that Anthony Hopkins won because he was fun. And they all agree that it would be shocking if CODA doesn’t win best picture. One woman said that she originally had West Side Story in first place, but now no one is talking about any other movie but CODA. I was starting to feel a bit sick listening to that, so I’ve turned it off. I’ll wait until the actual red carpet interviews, where they at least pretend they’re rooting for every actor they speak to. Troy seems like a fun and nice guy, so if he wins, I will be good with it, since he was so sincere congratulating everyone else nominated. I can't watch that stuff. It is always too noisy and too much jabber and I get annoyed on a good day, let alone now. I will confess my two biggest fears: 1. The BIGGEST reason. I have quite enjoyed all the conversation on this forum and it will become a desert with long stretches between movies and ugh, what will I do with myself? I really love getting up in the morning and having 4-5 pages of chatter to catch up on. Sob.2. THE STUPID reason. Things will never be like this again. This was the perfect combination of a wonderful director, plenty of money for film festivals and interviews and long prep times and just the depth of everything - behind the scenes and all the crew and everything. It just makes me so sad. ok, gotta go feed the dogs. OK, maybe I am also sad because of other reasons, but (sigh) it is just...I don't know. I just don't know.

It’s so funny how it’s both treated as a horse race and a *sticks finger in the air* which way is the wind blowing today? contest. Maybe the voters really all are simpletons who have no individual thoughts about which films, artists, performers did top notch work this year and are happy to follow the Twitter trending lists to decide who to vote for.
But it just seems strange that everyone would cop to it, instead of at least trying to pretend that the Oscars are honoring excellence in film.
I also have never understood the “oops we should have awarded this person years ago for good work, so let’s give him/her an Oscar before we forget or she/he dies” approach. Because all it does is add additional names to the list of people “owed” for extraordinary work that was passed over while the Oscars once again played catch up.
There was a “what the Oscars got right/wrong” retrospective in the Washington Post last week that covered the last few decades of Best Picture contests. And it was ridiculous how many years there was a comment like “Picture A was the best film this year, but Picture B was directed by someone who deserved it 2 years ago but didn’t get it because this other director who should have gotten it 5 years ago was also had a film up, even though it wasn’t as good but he was owed, so they gave it to him, so this year Picture B won it”
Like, just start fresh every year with the films in front of you, and use the special awards to acknowledge career achievements when you need to. Otherwise it’s always playing catch up and continuing to erode relevance.
I set up DVR recordings for tonight so that I don’t have to stay up and watch till the end, but can see any interesting moments tomorrow … or skip it if it doesn’t look interesting.

Even if that approach made sense, why would we do it wth Will Smith? If he dies without winning an Oscar, is it really going to be one of those “It’s shocking that he never won an Oscar” situations? Don’t we reserve that for actors who everyone just assumes has won an Oscar until we find out they never did? No one is saying that about WS.

Just remember that Scorsese DIDN’T won an Oscar until The Departed in 2006! At the time, people said it was because some East-West coast rivalry (like Hip-Hop!) and indeed another filmmaker very linked to New York like Spike Lee never won until 2019!!!! (And only as scriptwriter!) But Woody Allen won a good number even when he never or almost never went to the ceremony. He just didn’t care for them.
Kubrick only won as a visual effects artist!!! And Hitchcock, like Chaplin, only won one of those “homage” ones!
I really enjoyed the documentary Icarus (BC is attached to the director next project!) but I just can’t believe they didn’t gave that award to Agnes Varda (who received one honorific that year, you know the year before her death!) when her documentary was better AND it would had been a double culmination to a historic career AND life!

Cary Grant never won an Oscar. And Buster Keaton only got an honorary one like a year before he died. So, yes, it’s garbage and silly but hope wears ever on…
I just saw Kodi on the carpet! How can you miss him he’s 7 feet tall, lol. Just a quick glimpse as he wandered by but he’s wearing a powder blue double breasted tux with a matching shirt and a silver chain instead of a tie. And an earring. I love his style.

Also hopefully he continues doing exciting stuff with exciting people. Wes Anderson film surely will be released in some important festival and it’s Netflix so they will promote it to hell! Anderson isn’t necessarily an award baity filmmaker but neither Campion so we will see!

When I switched back to the red-carpet show, they were interviewing him. It made me feel so happy that he was so happy to be there! And of course he should be happy - he’s nominated and at the Oscars! Even those big clunky shoes/boots he likes to wear are the same powder blue as his outfit.
They just showed Kirsten Dunst, all in red, and Jesse is all in black.

Been watching a stream. This opening spiel is so awkward. Let me echo the sentiments here that you guys have made this awards season much more bearable and fun <3

I’m not watching it! I’m following it on Twitter! It indeed sounds boring!
