The Oscars have always been mediocre. That didn't started with CODA. Probably the difference is that the classic star system disappeared and there isn't any glamor anymore. That was the "point" of the award.
What it's relatively new is the award pundits. In the old days, critics used to do the "prediction" but even the most mainstream Hollywood obsessed critic was slightly cynical about the award itself. Now there is business around predictions and it's populated by people who love the award but hate movies. I guess they are the kids who grow old believing the facade. Ironically, the business developed at the same time the award itself is dying!

Lots of people are saying that Rosamund Pike should have won for Gone Girl, so somehow she is owed an Oscar now.
I do agree that a movie doesn’t have to be a masterpiece to have great performances, but Gone Girl was awful! Yes, a lot of people oooed and aaahed over it, but I just kept thinking “What a stupid movie!” as I watched it. And she has since played that same psycho character in other roles.
