TWC set the release dates for The Current War, Marie Magdalene and other pictures. Deadline suggests that Mary Magdalene release date set for the day after Thanksgiving means that it is going for the awards-season run. Re Current War: Weinstein's choice: Mary Magdalene. Deadline

The Hollywood Reporter article says the wider release is a moderate one Meanwhile Mary Magdalene: I wouldn't describe Mary Magdalene as the biblical heroine.
I think TWC is ditching TCW for MM as I have guessed. This year they did the same to The Founder.

"Ditching" not necessarily quite the right word, there, but yes, it looks to me as if Mary Magdalene is the Weinstein Oscar pony of choice too.
I guess they think they've seen enough of the unfinished TCW product to have made the decision. Disappointing!
Time to flip my shares in TCW on HSX I think. Does anyone else play that?

Just to put things in perspective, here is a list of movies from recent Oscar races that have been "dumped" on December 25th:
2012: Les Miserable, Django Unchained 2013: The Wolf of Wall Street 2014: Into the Woods, American Sniper 2015: Joy, The Revenant, The Hateful Eight 2016: Fences, Hidden Figures
Movies that are considered Oscar contenders are often given a limited release on December 25th, or even later, so that they can get in under the deadline.

I don't understand why the release date shows a lack of interest in TCW. Both movies are being released in time for awards season. We don't know which other movies are being released around the same time that might be a conflict. I think that they try to schedule their releases for times when they will attract the biggest audience.

I looked at The Founder release date and it was not even in December, he really dumped it. It was released in January 20. And a week after he released Gold. So I was wrong there.
I think he releases his first choice in November around Thanksgiving. I really never payed attention to awards till I followed the 2015 season. It's what I read.

He is not "ditching" it. Yes, Mary Magdalene has, for now, his favorite date but TCW is, for now, in the competition. I said "for now" twice because he is always changing dates. For example, in 2013, August:Osage County was scheduled on Thanksgiving but after the cold reception at TIFF (on September) he changed the date at last minute and put Philomena in its place.
Also TCW is not even finished yet.

It's really too early to worry. So much can happen in the next 10 months or so. A year ago, Birth of a Nation was considered a frontrunner. December 25th is actually a very prestgious release date for a movie. If they were going to dump it, they wouldn't even bother with that date. That doesn't guarantee that either movie will be a hit, or an Oscar contender, or even good.

He traditionally realeses Quentin Tarantino movies at Christmas!
Agreed. It's too early to worry. We should wait until reviews!
Also being ditched by Weinstein is not the end. Great filmmakers had been ditched by Weinstein!
