Thanks for explaining! No, I've never seen that "Quick quote" before, and I still don't. I'm on my iPad - can that be the reason?

I use Quick quote and it's really very handy! But I'm afraid it doesn't work on mobile, cause you can't "hover" over the highlighted text like you do on laptop. I mostly use this on my PC, on mobile there's no option but to use the more complicated reply function I'm afraid. :/ I haven't tried to use this forum on my iPad, it's really old, cranky and unreliable, so I try to only use it when I really need to. But I assume mllemass that the same problems that exist on a phone exist on the iPad too, it seems the quick reply thing simply doesn't work on touch screen.

A:OC released at Christmas too, maybe it's just a favorite date for TWC films. As others noted, TCW will probably show months earlier at festivals, so will have lots of time to generate word of mouth. I'm more concerned that Hollywood Reporter describes it as "limited opening with moderate expansion." I hoped for a wide opening since TIG did so well, but maybe it is more suited to indie theaters. Better to succeed on a small scale than be less-than-successful on a big scale (like TFE.) BC is now at the point that every role gets Oscar buzz before the movie ever comes out, so I'm sure it will be considered.

I was telling a (non BC fan) friend about the release date and the first thing out of her mouth was, "that's a good date." It's being treated well, so I'm sure it's all fine. I think we put too much store in awards anyway. If he's nominated and wins, great! If not, there's still a lovely performance to admire. Either way, we win. 😃

Here's the theatre count for TIG from Box Office Mojo - www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=daily&id=imitationgame.htmMovies like TCW don't usually open expansively. TIG really never had a big scale theatre expansion - at its widest it was on just over 2400 screens in the US and Canada (a far cry from the nearly 4000 screens of the blockbusters). From its release date (Nov. 28/14) until Xmas Eve it went from 4 screen to 34 screens, and even after that it only increased to over a thousand screens the 2nd week of January 2015. It was at its highest distribution (2,402 screens) for 1 week (and an additional week at 2,025 screens). A lot of prestige films start out very small scale and have limited expansion for a while and then take to a larger level the closer it gets to the Oscars. It is a familiar pattern. I will be over the moon if TCW does the BO and gets the award recognition of TIG. :-))

After TIG finished its run in the multiplex theatres, it remained at an artsy theatre in my neighbourhood for a few months. I remember driving home from a funeral in April that year and noticing that the theatre was still showing it. They've done the same thing with Moonlight - they're still showing it, rotating it with other movies. I don't think Moonlight ever showed at the multiplex where I live, but they're showing it now to take advantage of its Oscar win.

According to Wikipedia, "wide release" is defined as 600 theaters or more in the US and Canada. So, if TIG had 2,400 screens that easily qualifies as wide release.
"Limited release" is to select theaters in mostly urban markets, but I don't know how many more "moderate expansion" would be. Presumably less than 600 nationwide are planned. I'm in St. Louis so I'll be able to see it either way, but not everyone is near an arthouse-type theater.
Of course, if (when!) it is a hit they can always open wider!

I don't think those things are decided yet. The expansion go according the success. I guess the article is making reference to the first expansion. Then if things go well it surely would have another expansion.
The movie just finished the main photography so it's not even finished yet. It's very improbable Weinstein is taking definitive decisions yet. He also use to change of opinion at least minute so who knows what would happen at this stage?
We should begin to worry if he suddenly decides to release it out of the award season (January-March) and in his case that doesn't even mean it would be an awful movie. Ask poor James Gray! But yes, it wouldn't be good!

I am fully aware of what the technical definition of "wide release" is. I just meant that at 2,400 screens that is well below full saturation point for NA screens. That's all. TIG followed the typical prestigious film route - extremely small initial release (4 screens on Nov. 28/14), then a slow moderate expansion stage (8, 25, 34 screens up to Xmas Eve) until it got up into "wide release" (but even then it was a modest "wide" at about 750-ish screens), then a big push around Oscar time (over 1,000 and then later over 2,000 screens) and then a decline in screens afterward. I am betting that if TCW gets positive buzz it will do about as many screens as TIG eventually. But a lot will be determined by the reception it gets. With the advent of services like Kodi, Netflix, etc. art house films are pretty well available to most people who want them in their homes. Although this doesn't do anything for BO receipts, so that can be a crapshoot. :-))
