I finally watched it.
This only make sense as promoting feminism if their target were pre-teens or teens or younger. It's superficial, repetitive and I think it's the first time that I got what they mean by white feminism. It's Barbie.
The first part is fun. I like the scenes where they go from Barbieland to the real world and vice versa. The second part, where they don't undestand what is happening or how things work in the real world is funny too. That could have been a good movie, instead of unsubtle preaching.
Again, the target must have been very young people because the scenes where they chase Barbie in Mattel's building (and everything there) or the streets are infantile.
Margot Robbie was very good. I don't think that Ryan Gosling was better than her. The famous monologue had nothing special.
The script was so-so. The set design wonderful.
I still don't see nothing special about GG's writing or directing. She's fine but overrated.

More or less what I thought @magdafr. I thought it was tremendous fun but the overuse of the word “patriarchy” did grate. I was thinking yes I get it you’re making a feminist point. No need to batter me over the head with it.
However as a piece of sheer entertainment it was a great movie. Not really Oscar worthy stuff though. Except for Ryan Gosling. I did think he shone with his comic timing so his nomination is ok with me. I’m baffled by America Ferrera’s nom though. She’s a good actress (I loved her in Ugly Betty) but I didn’t think she had much of a part in Barbie.
Agree re Greta Gerwig. Her writing is too one note. Always too heavy handed with the feminism message. It’s like she thinks the audience are too stupid to get it unless she lays it on with a trowel. It ends up undermining the overall script.

I haven't watched it (nor do I intend to) but I did read this interesting article in the Guardian about the movie... www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/aug/10/barbie-shameless-product-placement-film-adverts-global-cinema . It concerns the commercialism in the movie. I know a certain amount of "endorsement" or product placement is commonplace in movies today but I feel entire movies that are walking advertisements for products are just a bridge too far for me. I remember when there was serious discussions about the amount of blatant commercialism in children's cartoons on Saturday morning and how it should be monitored because it was overly aggressive and more like brainwashing than entertainment. And now we are celebrating (with Oscar nominations no less) an entire movie that is "made by Mattel"!? To me it seems that the makers wrapped it up in a so-called "feminist message" to give it some cover of legitimacy, but it seems more like one big commercial to sell as many products as possible. That just gives me the creeps.

I’m sure treatises have been written about Barbie’s very human female journey from mindless doll to actualized woman in the movie, but I agree it was too overt. What everyone has said here is spot on. But it was still interesting, unique, lovingly made, and spoke to countless people, which is a good thing. Perhaps not Oscar worthy, imo, but it was worth a watch.
