Impressive!
I guess I'm going to watch Barbie because the reviews and comments I read (not many and not all positive) made it interesting, especially those comments that come from people who hadn't like much GG's movies (as director). But, I understand others not wanting to watch it. I've never seen a Mission Impossible or Top Gun movie and I have no intention to watch any.

But I liked the idea of something satirising the whole Barbie phenomenon. I love spoofs of unimportant stuff lots of people take seriously. That's the most profound takeaway I've seen from the entire discourse around Barbie (across all of social media)! I think it also depends on your kind of comedy. I don't enjoy Austin Powers and walked out of the movie back in the day (there, I said it!!! LOL). I also don't enjoy any of the Ben Stiller movies, so I know this spoof will be wasted on me because I never can enjoy this kind of thing. It's just not funny to me. However, I can appreciate the movie taking the mick- we could all use that given the general state of the world we live in. Also, I thoroughly am enjoying seeing just how enthused people are about it. I cracked up at MagdaFR 's comment that people were taking their dolls to the movie. I don't judge them but it is wild to me and I find it both funny and endearing. They have let out their inner child. I have one neighbour who has been dressing in pink (head-to-toe) every single day the last two weeks (have I already told this story?). It's BARBIE and PINK and CAMP in the best way possible. Seeing her so unbelievably happy has been truly lovely. Still not going to make me sit through the movie, but I'm loving this for her. Truly. She's so happy, it's wonderful to witness. No idea why I'm rambling, it has nothing to do with anything. Sorry!!!

What it is not is a movie for young children as the dialogue and the storyline are too adult or at least teen oriented. I would love to have known what the young kids at the screening I went to thought of it. But I guess the songs and dancing would have appealed to them. There are people who see "Barbie" and don't think that perhaps it isn't a movie for little (o not so little) children. I guess most people just don't read reviews (or comments on social media) but, given the the millions they invested in marketing, including new dolls, etc. everybody heard about it. So it is working as a family movie, a feminist movie, an auterish movie, a big commercial for Mattel, and more. I've seen lots of takes on it, some deranged, some very funny like some girls/women angry because Ken had a too big part and it should have been just about Barbie (like Scarlett Witch and Doctor Strange haha).

You said it perfectly!
That's exactly what I feel about this movie.
It kind of reminds me of the Glass Onion movie. It got stellar Rotten Tomatoes reviews by critics and viewers and I got hoodwinked into watching it on a streamingservice... and HATED IT THROUGH AND THROUGH!
I was resentful I wasted time watching it.
Fool me once... you know how it goes. I'm not going to be suckered into watching tripe just because others think it's "clever".
Hate Barbie (as a doll), hate the colour PINK and the marketing campaign for this movie looks like corporate shilling.
On the other hand, I am REALLY excited to see Oppenheimer! And Dan is too. So is everyone I pal around with.

So is everyone I pal around with. Well I guess I must be stupid then because I chose to watch it and did get the humour and did think it was clever. Whereas I thought Oppenheimer was desperately trying to be clever and profound but failed miserably on both counts. Maybe I’m not intelligent enough to realise that Christopher Nolan is much more worthy than Greta Gerwig because he’s managed to trivialise an important subject with his frequently ridiculous directorial conceits whereas Gerwig has managed to use something simple to say some serious things. Also it isn’t an either or. It is possible to see films like Oppenheimer AND Barbie and still not be drummed out of the “more worthy than thou” fraternity. Anyway I’m stopping now as I’m getting angry & a movie discussion isn’t worth expending this much of my emotional energy on.

I am loving the intense, strong emotions this movie is kicking up, even here on this forum and most of us haven’t even seen it, lol. I, too, judge movies in advance, sometimes by genre or by actors, directors, subject matter, etc., so I’m not going to blame anyone for not wanting to watch Barbie. I’ll have to wait for streaming - I don’t go to the theater anymore. So it’ll be something I can look forward to. I LOVE pink, loved my Barbies when I had them, enjoy a snarky, smart ass meta comedy musical, so I’m pretty sure this’ll give me a few laughs. Looking forward to it. 😃

I'm not going to be suckered into watching tripe just because others think it's "clever". I don't think you should watch something you don't want to. We're talking about a movie, so it's really not a big deal if you don't choose to see it. However, I don't think it's fair to come down so hard on others who do enjoy it. As you can see from Ellie's response above, it reads as though you're judging those who do enjoy this kind of film and are able to take away some positive message from it. Knowing you, that's not how you meant it, but that's kind of how it sounds.. I hope you enjoy Oppenheimer! Good thing they're both out at the same time to cater to everyone's tastes!

The money! The money they're going to make from the movie itself and then all the merch on top of it. OMG! THE MONEY! *cries in poor* Can someone tell me if this has beaten the figures for the latest Tom Cruise movie (was it another Mission Impossible?). I'd really like to hear that it did, lol.
