I just looked up Crazy Stupid Love because it sounded familiar, and it turns out I’ve seen it. It was one of a bunch of generic romantic comedies that came out a few years ago, and all were forgettable. It’s a romantic comedy but I don’t think it’s so generic: it’s about an old middle class kinda loser who suddenly finds himself single instead of a fantasy about young successful urbanites with perfect lives but yeah, probably not a classic. Still, Gosling is pretty funny as the almost cartoonishly guru of pseudo cool masculinity. I haven’t seen Barbie but I guess there’s some similarities in that regard (he like a cartoonishly heartthrob) although I guess his Ken is much dumber!

It was one of a bunch of generic romantic comedies that came out a few years ago, and all were forgettable. I have a vivid memory of watching The Notebook, though. It was a big deal because it starred two Canadians, and I remember sitting in the theatre, waiting for it to become better. But it never did. When it ended, I turned to my sister, shrugged and said “It was just a TV movie that they decided to show at a theatre”. It would have been a pretty good Hallmark/Lifetime movie. And I still feel that way, even though other people are nuts about it. The more clips I see of Barbie, the worse it looks to me. My sister told me the same thing yesterday - she doesn’t understand why anyone would want to see it. She said it has the same creepy look of the awful Jim Carrey Grinch movie. Well I wanted to see it and I enjoyed it. 🤷♀️ It was nothing like the Jim Carrey Grinch movie either in looks or tone. But to each their own. Only I always think it’s a bad idea to decide whether or not you like something if you haven’t actually seen or tried it. Sometimes you can be pleasantly surprised. Sometimes not of course. But it’s always worth giving things a try I think as you can miss out on some interesting or fun experiences by making your mind up too soon. Barbie is not the greatest movie ever made but it IS great fun.

I found Ken’s lines hilarious. And Gosling delivers them so well. Ken is dumb but you do also do find yourself feeling a little bit sorry for him.

Barbie is not the greatest movie ever made but it IS great fun. I concur. I'm not in the demographic for this movie and will not be watching it because I know it's not my thing. However, there's clearly an audience for it and I hope they all get a big kick out of it! Movies are supposed to bring joy, so I wouldn't yuck on their yum just because it's not my kind of film. That happens too often and serves no purpose. It's like the discussions earlier about Marvel vs. Arthouse movies...there's room for both and there's a very healthy audience for both. The thing I don't get with this movie is whether or not it's supposed to be a political statement (some sort of anti-patriarchal message?) or just a light summer nostalgic flick. From the marketing, it would seem to be straddling both, but I'm sure that'll leave everyone disappointed. No doubt I'm not clear on this because I'm not actually following the press around it but only gleaning bits of info whenever something pops up on my feed.

I think it is essentially a really fun satire on the whole male and female stereotypes that forgets that’s what it is at times and tries to get too serious about “the patriarchy” which jars a bit with the jocular tone. The jokes were already making those serious points quite well. They don’t need to be driven home with a sledgehammer. But all in all it works. What it is not is a movie for young children as the dialogue and the storyline are too adult or at least teen oriented. I would love to have known what the young kids at the screening I went to thought of it. But I guess the songs and dancing would have appealed to them.

I saw Crazy Stupid Love at a time when I was going to see pretty much every movie that came out (except for violent action movies). And no, it left no impression on me at all. I guess that means I didn’t hate it, but I certainly didn’t like it, either. It really did seem like a million other movies I’d seen.
I am going to judge Barbie without seeing it, like I judge other movies without seeing them! The idea of a Barbie movie didn’t interest me, the trailer and the many promotional clips also haven’t convinced me that I would like it, so no, I won’t be watching it. I don’t usually trust reviews in order to decide what to watch or what to like. I’ve loved movies that critics and everyone else hated.

I’ve loved movies that critics and everyone else hated. I convinced my neighbour to watch TPOTD. He only lasted 35 mins and then texted me to say he was bored and nothing was happening. I wanted to send him your way so you could tell him to PAY ATTENTION! 😂😂😂

Had no interest in dolls then or now. But I liked the idea of something satirising the whole Barbie phenomenon. I love spoofs of unimportant stuff lots of people take seriously. I also loved Zoolander for its send up of the whole “takes itself waaay too seriously” modelling/fashion world. Sometimes you can make better serious points with comedy than drama. It doesn’t suit every subject obviously. I doubt Oppenheimer the slapstick musical would work!
