I’m not really sure that’s entirely true. Monty Python did very well in the US and you don’t get much more British than MP humour. However, that said, lots of successful British comedies such as The Office are remade for the US with very different scripts. British (and Irish) humour tends to be quite dark and sarcastic and I’m not sure that always resonates with American audiences en masse. I get the impression those US citizens who enjoy British humour are regarded as something of a niche market. Agreed! That’s the element I think this project sounds interesting. If this is a British version then why they will do? Because the original was already a dark comedy so if you add now a British sense of humor then it could be even darker!

I read some comments on Facebook, too. I thought they would be slightly more negative because people there are older and probably actually remember the first movie. They were still mixed. It depends of where they were commenting.
Anyway, someone was very angry and wrote a long post about how remakes are evil or something but then someone told him that these movies are based on a book and there are multiple adaptations of other literary sources and sometimes they are equally good. The guy responded that this new an adaptation is based on the movie not the book because, even when they mention the book, they literally said so! That’s not true and one of the things that catches my eye is that the son of the author is actually also one of the producers! There is a quote of him talking about the project and his father! He also has a deal with Searchlight for movie adaptations of his father books! They literally said so in the article p!
I posted that the project was mentioned on his official site a few days ago and, by the way, there is also info about a theatre version with Alfred Molina and, if you google it, you can find that Cate Blanchet also acted in another theatre version. So no, Danny De Vito version isn’t the only one out there!

I find it fun that a movie which I watched (on tv, I guess) but I can't remember anything about it except for a falling chandelier is considered by some people a classic that can't be touched.

It was pretty popular in the 1980s but yeah, it’s not exactly The Night of the Hunter! Someone said that mid comedies are remaked all the time in Hollywood since its founding. The “mid” is kinda cruel but yeah, they are considered entertainment that a lot of time people remember fondly but not exactly untouchable high art. I under the frustration of not seeing new ideas but it’s ridiculous to criticize before time. The advantage of this movie is that I don’t think most kids nowadays have actually watched it he old version. Probably the disadvantage is that those kids are allegedly more sensitive than old people! It would be interesting how they receive the fat joke about the kids but also I just read that in the original movie she cooks his dog and fools him to eat it! That’s pretty dark indeed! It would be funny to see how kids would react to something like that! Lol

she only pretends to cook the dog and feed him the pate. But he drives over her cat and kills it. 😬

I've just been on AW and someone opened some days ago a thread with the news about The Roses. Half or more of the comments are nasty, that is totally unnecessary, that the cast and director are a downgrade, the difference of ages and being Colman older than BC, that how they dare to remake a perfect movie from Danny DeVito and other things.

I was about to post this in the Rogue Male thread but I think this is the right one (but it’s a continuation of what Magda posted there), I was thinking that it was interesting that the remake of a 20th Century Fox hit comedy is now made by its speciality wing, Searchlight. Maybe a signal of how times have change and now comedies are considered niche but I just didn’t remembered that Disney bought the company! And according to Wikipedia, contrary to its mother company, Searchlight is actually independent of Disney about decision making. That’s actually better! Just for curiosity, I checked what 20th Century is doing right now because I think I have heard much more about Searchlight than them nowadays! Probably because my taste on films but also because they are mainly doing Hulu films! And the Avatar flicks! They also did Branagh’s Poirot movies; Amsterdam, the David O Russell bomb; and some horror hits but apart of that it’s just productions that go directly to Disney+ and Hulu! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_20th_Century_Studios_filmsSo yeah, probably it’s better that the rights of the book ended with the speciality wing!
