I understand how he feels. It just goes to show what happens when people take fandom too far. They end up killing the thing they love and that’s sad.

Very true Ellie. It is like crushing a kitten to death because it is just sooooooo cute!!!! You got to appreciate something without smothering it so it can’t breathe. I think some people just never let the show have a bit of leeway to creatively do different things. They just wanted what they wanted and nothing else would ever be acceptable to them. That is a lot of pressure to put on the people involved in the making of the show. And once the principles (BC, MF, MG and SM, etc.) felt boxed in, in any way, with making the show, they understandably would just put it in “pause” (for as long as they like) because they can always do something else with their time and talents.

Totally agreed with him! Also I'm glad it was him and not BC who said it! I can see the hysteria on Tumblr and Twitter!!!

It might not be fair but it is what it is, Martin has a different reputation to Benedict. His image is a bit curmudgeonly (I hope I spelled that right) so people accept more frank comments from him. The internet would be all over this article if BC had said the exact same things.

Good for Martin. Tell it like it is, honey. And there are *still* folks who think he’s lying.
This is why we can’t have nice things.

MF has it right in some ways, he makes it very clear that he has no f*cks to give about what people think of him. And he doesn’t get the hassle BC gets because the sort of fans who overstep the mark with BC wouldn’t dare try the same antics with MF because they know he would not hesitate to tell them to eff off.

Well, I think the backlash against this interview will be different than if it were BC doing it, but I think it will come out eventually. A lot of JLers are kind of in a stage of complete denial about what MF said this morning. And they don’t seem like they want to even acknowledge it let alone deal with the contents of what he has said. At least on non-TJLC sites.
I have seen a couple of #Norbury sites that either deny he said anything anti-JL at all (you see they really are like the Sophie Haters, or at least cousins) or just consider this more of the “queerbashing” campaign that they accused M&G of (in this case M&G are the boogie man instead of Sophie, HW, or the Russian Mafia!!!).
I totally agree Freeman has a definitely harder edge to his public persona than BC does and this makes reaction from fans very different.

Also, BC has something...ineffable about him that adds to the frenzy when he speaks. Martin is a regular guy. Ben is an otherworldly creature who spawns love and hate in his wake. You can take or leave Martin, he’s normal. Ben brings out passionate opinions.
I’m not describing it very well, but Martin doesn’t have that aura of fantasicalness about him, so he can speak his opinion and folks go, okay. If Ben said the exact same things, social media would have a meltdown.

“Ineffable” is the correct word, absolutely.
MF is more.. expected to be blunt and doesn’t get misinterpreted as much as Ben does.
With Ben he has an almost ethereal quality about him and when he is blunt (and he has been on occasion) people are really taken back and react strongly to it (and most of the time go ballistic as in HOW DARE HE!!!). Like with the refugee issue and Hamlet, or even mundane stuff like when BC said that thing about not liking his hair long because he felt too “girly”.

I also think the attention was always slightly more focused on BC than MF. After all, he was Sherlock (yes, I'm talking un pastel tense!)
