I felt a pang of sadness reading about this, because it probably does mean the end of Sherlock. But I'm still looking forward to this new Dracula. There was a big Dracula craze way back when I was in high school, so I've always been fascinated by the story. I even worked on the props and set of a musical comedy back then called Dracula, Baby. Really! The recent teen vampire trend just doesn't interest me, though.
We really shouldn't be surprised by this announcement. For years, Mofftiss have been saying that Sherlock Holmes has been represented on film more than any other fictional character - other than Dracula, who, technically isn't human. I think they really enjoy the challenge of working with material that's so familiar to so many people.
I can't wait to see what they do with it! But no matter what, my heart will always belong to Sherlock!

Bravo M&G!
I am not sad really because it shows people that M&G are busy moving on to other potential projects that are commercially viable and interesting. Certain people (mainly TJLCers) have convinced themselves that M&G are completely talentless as writers/creators and don't deserve further success, which couldn't be further from the truth. Even as of yesterday I saw a long screed by these types that crowed about how TJLCers could have written Scandal in Belgravia sooooo much better than M&G, so the perpetuation of this "we could do better" brag is still going full throttle among that crowd (and yet... where are their results???). The proof is in the pudding and right now it is M&G who are the chefs cooking up more delights!
Sherlock will always be a special show to me but I never pictured M&G, Sue V., BC and MF, etc. being the types who would let moss grow under their feet and make it a main focus to be getting back to Sherlock. Especially not after the way they have been treated by the so-called "fans" of the show who threatened them, publicly insulted and tried to humiliate them on social media (and beyond), bullied people/organisations they were associated with, harassed the cast and crew, and continue to this day to act in vile insulting ways towards them on their blogs, which mirror the tactics/language of the SH-C Haters to a T (they must be so proud!!🤔🙄)!
If I were M&G (and Sue V.) I would NEVER go back to Sherlock on principle alone.
But they obviously love the show (and the people who worked on it) so much that they more in likely don't want to ever rule it out in a definite fashion and probably would still return to it if all the stars and planets aligned in the right way (despite all the BS thrown at them after Season 4). But I wouldn't think it likely in the next 5 years.
I am glad they are moving on to exciting new projects and I certainly will check out the new series when it comes out. They are hugely talented people and deserve all future success (which I am confident will happen).
:-))

A tweet from Mark Gatiss, and lots of interesting replies. There are several suggestions for Pater Capaldi as Dracula.

I'm happy they have a new project. It's sad if it means no more Sherlock but then again, I think season 4 ended in a very The End. type of a way so it's logical if they plan to do no more. I don't even know if I want them to do more. Although them having a new show doesn't necessarily mean they'll never be doing more Sherlock. Moffat is stepping down from Doctor Who this year and that took the lion's share of his time anyways, and he still managed to squeeze Sherlock in every two or so years (everyone was always going on about Benedict and Martin being "too busy", and although that's certainly true, I always thought Moffat was probably the one with the most hectic and unforgiving schedule.)
It's about vampires so, meh (the vampire boom from a few years ago exhausted me on them) but if they manage to give it the Sherlock treatment then I'll watch it regardless.

I had read that Moffat was going to update a series he did about Jekyll and Hyde which, according to comments on Imdb (before the boards were shut down) was very good. It is on youtube but I didn't had time to watch it. It was a modern version with James Nesbitt playing a descendant of Jekyll.
They probably decided to switch to Dracula.
I haven't seen any of the vampires movies/series so I'm not tired of them.
Zombies is another story.

I just saw the article re Mofftiss and Dracula too, and with Moffatt stepping down as show runner for Doctor Who, of course there was going to be something else. And I think Dracula could be great. If it was me, though, I don't think I'd stick too closely to the original, but given that their updating of Sherlock worked so well for them, I'd be surprised if they didn't follow that ragingly successful precedent.
I remember that series, although I can't recall the name of it. It was certainly well received at the time, but I only watched the beginning of it and didn't like it. I didn't dislike the concept, though, I just couldn't get over that I really, really don't like James Nesbitt. I actively disliked him then, and still do. Don't really know why, but that he was in it made it effectively unwatchable for me.

It doesn't mean this project means the end of Sherlock but it really sounds like it's. Of course, they could do two shows at ten time like did with Dr. Who and Sherlock but it definitely sounds like they are moving.
I'm not a big fan of Moffat and Gatiss but I actually have Dr. Jekyll on DVD. I bought it and other BBC's DVDs once that they were in my local supermarket at $99 pesos, like $5 dollars each! I haven't watched it, tho.! I also bought the first Dr. Who season, the modern version. I didn't understand it! Sherlock's DVD wasn't cheap so I guess it was more popular!

I love Dracula so I'll watch this for sure! Honestly IMO the final episode of Sherlock seemed so final, it almost wouldn't make sense to do any more.

I don't know why everyone thinks this means the end of Sherlock. All of them have said it's still a possibility, including Sue at the Sherlocked con here in the US just a few weeks ago. I know folks like to titrate their grief, lol, but there's no death yet. I'm confused.
