Unfortunately, conservative opinions are not tolerated well in Hollywood anymore Last year they nominated Mel Gibson.

Yes, Mel got nominated, but Hollywood also has a short memory. Someone says/does something outrageous and unacceptable, person gets chastised and ignored for months/years, time passes, they make another movie/thing and bingo! Rehabilitated. It's happened a zillion times and will happen again. America is quick to blame and quick to forgive.

I'm not actually sure where all the presumption that Gary Oldman is some sort of extreme right wing idiot is even coming from. As far as I was aware, there was one main comment of his that was taken out of context. And what I am absolutely sure about is that he doesn't offend in private, or the likes of BC wouldn't admire and like him so much.
But I did already go to the Awardswatch board re "The Darkest Hour" and it was a bit ridiculous. Human he certainly was, and there were some awful mistakes made, but Churchill wasn't the evil monster on a par with Hitler and Stalin as they're all agreeing with each other that he was. I'm British, and I'm well aware that this country owes him a debt that could never be paid!

There was The Contender incident and then more recent The Playboy interview (probably one or both were taken out of context) but I don't think he is someone who usually goes public about his political ideas the way Clint Eastwood do. And even when I'm Mexican and hated him supporting Trump, I still think he is a genius as filmmaker. Letters from Iwo Jima is one of my favorite modern American movies. His politics are problematic but I wouldn't negate his talent just because I think he is terrible wrong about something not even related to his movies.
History is complex but simple minds find difficult to understand nuances. Especially nowadays when Internet people expect you completely agreed with them and if not you are a nazi or a feminazi, depending on the side! And there is anything worst that people not picking extreme (crazy) sides! But one thing is sure, if Gary Oldman is great it doesn't matter if he plays Hitler or Stanlin or if he isn't a saint he deserves recognition for his performance.

Now I remembered this (from wikipedia)
and the mention to the jews. By the way Alec Baldwin is a kind of hero now.
I like GO and I agree in part with the excessive political correctness. Today I read an article about whitewashing (Khan was not in it but The Ancient One casting was) and the mixture they made with Hispanics and race was incredible.

I agree that there is too much sensitivity about statements made by actors. Some things will make some of us angry and some will make other people angry. The question here is whether he made the people he works with, works for, and whose vote he needs angry. He defended Gibson, Baldwin, and others for using gross epithets about Jews, Blacks, and Gays by saying that we all use those epithets. The typical rationalization of a bigot. No we don't all use those epithets. Who knows if the Academy voters will carry a grudge.
I think Gary Oldman is an excellent actor and I will go to see him in any film that sounds interesting. I don't really like the director of this movie, So I haven't made up my mind about whether to see it. BTW, I thought Oldman's performance in The Contender was bad, possibly the only bad performance I've seen him give - too many busy little mannerisms that added nothing to the character and were just distracting. He was hired to play a villain, so his complaints are ridiculous.

Benedict and other actors work with absolutely reprehensible people all the time.

I think they admire him as actor not because his political ideas which it's alright. I remember the Interview interview (sorry!) between Oldman and BC, in some moment it was clear they had very different political ideas (especially when talking about whistleblowers) but still both were polite about their differences. That's how real world usually works.
Also why the Academy would have a grudge against him for defending Baldwin and Gibson when the first one is a some kind of liberal hero nowadays and Gibson was nominated just last year? I'm not saying the epithets aren't gross, of course they were! Just that the Academy forgets those things.

Benedict and other actors work with absolutely reprehensible people all the time. Are you thinking in Weinstein, right?! He is the first name I though after reading your post! According to very strong rumors he is indeed reprehensible but interesting enough he is also very liberal! Obviously political affiliations has nothing to do with good character!

Well, Oldman does work with and for a lot of Jewish people who are, understandably, very sensitive about anti semitic remarks and attitudes. It's taken Mel Gibson a long time to recover a tiny bit from the fallout from his remarks and he was very drunk when he made them. SaveSave
