I don’t think Showtime has had recently a “phenomenon” series as HBO with BLL or Game of Thrones, etc. Yeah, I don't think they've had a really awards friendly show since the first few seasons of Homeland. I think that show's still going on but it really failed to keep its hype up. I remember it was the biggest new thing on television circa 2012 and even won some awards over Breaking Bad but then it just kind of...went off the radar. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt recently has done sexual abuse in a comedic way but that's still very different from P Melrose cause it's so overtly comedic rather than a comedy/drama combo. For that tone I guess Orange Is The New Black would be closest, there's some pretty dark stuff in there. But I'm with you, I just want it to be good! I haven't read the PM books so I've no expectations from those, but the trailer was really great, the story sounds interesting and the talent of course is major, so I'm thinking it will be a hit.

Maybe that interpretation comes from his refusal to leave her or cheat on her, no matter how badly she behaved. It drove her crazy! But we had many opportunities to see him being abusive, and he never was. If he hadn't fallen for Valentine, he'd still be with Sylvia today and she'd still be horrible to him.

During the SAG’s award one movie critic mentioned that dark comedies based in real life stuff was doing great because we are in Trump times. He was referring to Three Billbords and I, Tonya. I haven’t watched those two but tone is something you feel or not feel immediately so I guess the tone is right. The problem with them seems to be more moral: Billboards is about race which it’s a very contentious theme in the USA and I, Tonya is a modern reinterpretation of an ambiguous figure who was involve in a nasty crime against her sport rival.
There is not moral ambiguity with Patrick Melrose. The abusers had isssues who probably influenced their actions but the plot doesn’t have mercy with their portraits. We could say that Patrick use humor to survive but interesting enough he feels conflicted with his sense of humor. He describes “irony” as more addictive than heroin. As be there but not being there for the fixed meaning (during the rape scene he feels as a neutral observer who is looking but not being there). So humor is really mixed with pain there!

Must say I thought AS was absolutely terrific in BLL. What is it you didn’t like about his performance Coolclearwaters? I’m not looking for an argument, I’m just intetested in your opinion. I’m always intrigued when there are opposite reactions to a performance or actor.
For example I am not a fan of Meryl Streep’s acting. I find her very mannered. But I’ve long since accepted that puts me very much in the minority. 😀

For example I am not a fan of Meryl Streep’s acting. I find her very mannered. I do too sometimes, so you're definitely not alone. The most blatant example I can think of is the cooking movie (Julia and Juliet? Something like that.) People tend to talk of Meryl's "ticks" but they were in overdrive in that film, so much so that it ruined all enjoyment I might have gotten from that movie otherwise. (Amy Adams was very charming in it though!) But then I watch a classic like Sophie's Choice and suddenly she's back to being the best actress of our times.

He just didn’t seem real to me at all - not wooden exactly, but not lifelike.
I have mixed feelings about Streep. She’s not one of my favorite actresses and I think she can be mannered, but sometimes she’s wonderful. It’s, are you familiar with Julia Child, the person she was portraying in Julie & Julia? She had very strange, OTT mannerisms in real life.

I've seen Meryl Streep in lots of things over the years, and I think she's pretty amazing. I don't think she's ever played the same type of character twice, so you could never say that she gets typecast. For years, she was mainly known for doing a wide range of accents, but now it's just taken for granted that she can play any role she chooses. I don't think that her movies are always good, but I do think she elevates them. I remember Benedict talking about working with her in AOC, and I found the quote: www.simplystreep.com/2013/05/16/benedict-cumberbatch-talks-working-with-streep/

Excellent! He deserves every award he is nominated for in my opinion! I loved Season 4 so if it gets any recognition it makes my day!
Well done and thanks for posting this!!
It’s been a banner day - first those lovely twitter pix and an announcemt that there will be a new interview by not one but two people!!! Then that comment that puts a thumb in the eye of the haters (with Ben mentioning his family - it’s always a good day when the Haters/Septics get their panties twisted) and now your post telling about a new award for BC from his work in Sherlock!!! Add to that sgev’s post with more news about Rio/Let It Fall Back/untitled and it’s a “top of the world!!” day!
:-))
