I googled the scriptwriter because I haven't heard of him and interesting enough he is an action flicks writer! He did a panned Bruce Willis film and another silly action-comedy with Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson!
Dominic Cooke, of course, is BC's close friend who directed him in the play Rhinoceros and as Richard III in The Hollow Crown. He also directed Ian McEwan's adaptation of his own book, Chelsie Beach. And was Royal Court's artistic director for years!
Seriously, those two couldn't have more different careers!

A new project! Wow! It's about time there was news of something, but I wasn't personally expecting a new project quite yet, although as announced for Cannes is obviously the time for it. I thought there might be follow up news re at least a couple of the existing projects first. But this is one I certainly like the sound of. And given that this is being announced not just with a director already in place, but with his friend Dominic Cooke in place, for an existing script, one assumes that this must be nearly ready to go as long as the money is found for it at Cannes.

Gosh! I love these types of movies! I am excited that BC is attached to this. And another project that allows him to remain close to home base for the family. DC’s direction in The Hollow Crown was superb! I wonder if he will “fatten up” for this role? Greville Wynne was described as being “short” and somewhat “rotund”!!! At least he had a somewhat similar facial structure as BC (kind of a long face). And when he was released from the Soviet prison he had a shaved head (and even before that he was described as “balding”)! No Sherlock curls in this one!! But we will probably see a “pencil thin mustache” though.
:-))

An old war film + a terrible writer. Couldnt be any less excited. Is he not getting good offers ? TBF they aren't just "offering" him the role, he is producing/creating this opportunity! The writer doesn't seems very successful with critics indeed but someone as Dominic Cooke is not the kind director you can see being attracted to bad writing. This based in his CV. We will see! It's very early and again there are still not dates.

And also, of course, apart from this being a role BC has actively developed for himself to play, this will be a reflection of BC's comments about wanting to work with people he wants to work with. As long as they get the backing for this, he'll surely do it, if only because he obviously likes working with Dominic Cooke and won't like to let his friend down either. This is also what Marvel is all about to a large extent, facilitating the roles he wants to play and stories he'd like to see told. I don't particularly like all his preferences (the Irish one leaves me quite cold), but this interests me.

An old war film + a terrible writer. Couldnt be any less excited. Is he not getting good offers ? Well not every film will be a superhero comic book film! 😝 All kidding aside, sometimes certain creative forces come together and produce remarkable results, while writers with fabulous track records produce absolute dreck, so your assessment of the “terrible writer” may be premature. As well there is nothing wrong with a project based on “an old war film”. It may not be to your liking but I am certainly salivating about the possibilities that could hold! Great movies have been based on all sorts of sources - old films, old books, new books, short stories, plays, and yes even comic books! And as for BC “not getting good offers”... it is as sgev said this is BC himself making opportunities for himself because he has the power to do so now! And that is exciting! He has long said that he works on accepting roles for a variety of reasons now - working with certain people and doing projects that don’t take him far from his children and wife being top priorities among them. He also loves to do certain roles for personal challenges - learning something new, developing a certain skill set, bring certain characters to the screen, etc. Perhaps the selection of this project ticks a number of these boxes and tickles his fancy. He’s at a point in his career that he doesn’t have to wait around for “offers” - he is the person who makes the opportunities and does things that he is drawn to the most. That’s a very enviable position to be in IMO! :-))
