I agreed with him. At least wait to actually watch the movie to write your opinion piece! It's ridiculous to judge something based in an ad even if your fears eventually become real.

I suppose that if I reviewed movies for a living, I would actually watch the movie before deciding it was awful. But as a regular person, I do it all the time! The purpose of the trailer is to make me want to see the movie, and if they've made a bad trailer I will judge it from that.

I'm not a fan of Bill Maher, and I think he's the last person who should be criticizing people who complain about a movie! He's made an entire comedy career out of complaining, but others aren't allowed to do it, too? There were a lot of much better examples he could have used to make his point, so defending such a dumb movie makes him sound like an idiot. It's clear that he was only backing up fellow comedian Amy Schumer. The I Feel Pretty trailer alone made it look like a terrible movie, so why can't I say so? And why can't I feel a bit angry that one of the few movies made by a woman is about something so stupid? She has the money and the clout, and possibly the talent, to make a movie about something more than a woman's appearance. Do I have unreasonable expectations from her? Maybe! Well, I think he has some very valid points. Especially when it comes to the "professionally offened" types like those who inhabit places like YFIP or tumblr - always searching around everywhere to be offended at every bit of satire or comment. And I also think he spot on when he was talking about those people who "review" something by whining about that it isn't about instead of what it is (as he said, an AS comedy shouldn't have to star a WOC just to appease the SJWs on the internet). And this part of his comments really struck home to me because of all those types whinging on about BC's role in Zoolander or TJLCers (#queerbaiting #norbury types) going on endlessly about what failures M&G as writers and how JLer fanfic "authors" would have done much, much better! (They literally have been saying "why didn't you make the movie we would have made" and I would add Bill M's next part applies fully for me " - IF we had any talent, WHICH WE DON'T!!"). so I guess I could relate to what he was saying. BTW I don't think BM is saying people can't like things or complain about them (as you say he has made a career of complaining about things). What he is saying is there is absolutely no logic in complaining about things for what they CAN'T be. And that is more motivated by "professional complainers" whose only mission is to seek out anything that could possibly be interpreted as an offense, or demand their own brand of "reparations" for their pet issue regardless whether it was any where near what the movie was about. Not the people who have legitimate reasons for not liking a movie or a performance, but his remarks were directed more to the "special snowflakes" that think EVERY MOVIE has to be made just for them! :-))

But he was criticizing opinion pieces and regular agitators on social media. Not regular people. Or at least, that’s how I interpreted it.

This is like when I look at my cat and complain, “Why aren’t you Benedict Cumberbatch?” I love her, it’s just that I’d like her to be different. Lol!

The guy has played a pedophile rapist before! Taking a role doesn't mean he is "celebrating" it!

Of course I agree that it's ridiculous to review anything by saying what you wish it had been. I hate those reviews! Again, my problem was mainly with the movie he chose to defend. I read a lot of the reviews, and I don't think it was liked by anyone. But I'm sure there are people who did enjoy it despite the bad reviews. I still remember a review for Ghost that predicted it would bomb because Patrick Swayze was not believable as a banker, and Demi Moore looked terrible with her new short hair!
Some of my favourite movies (Love Actually, Muriel's Wedding, Billy Elliot) got terrible reviews when they came out, and that was long before social media turned anyone with a computer into a film critic!

Love Actually is one of my all time favourite movies too! All the bad reviews in the world couldn't get me to question that movie. I could watch it a thousand times and still laugh at the humour! And cry at the sad parts ! And sing along with that little girl on stage!!

And someone commented that although Ralph Fiennes played a Nazi in Schindler's List, he wasn't actually a Nazi in real life. I'm wondering if people are worried that Benedict will be making this character likeable. Maybe they aren't as familiar with Benedict's acting range as we are!

I think it doesn’t matter if the movie is bad or good, it’s still silly to criticize it BEFORE it’s released. I imagine he chose that movie because it was the “polemic” of the day.
More polemic opinions: I agreed with critics about Love, Actually. Sorry! 😉
